Bad News: Chipotle Is Giving People E. Coli and Qdoba Is Giving People Typhoid
CBS - Health officials may be close to finding the source of an E. coli outbreak in the Pacific Northwest that’s been linked to Chipotle restaurants. So far at least 37 cases of the illness have been reported. The outbreak has sent 12 people to the hospital and closed 43 Chipotle restaurants in Washington state and Oregon. Scientists also said Tuesday that they had identified the specific microorganism responsible, believed to be found on fresh produce such as lettuce, tomatoes, cilantro or onions, or possibly even spices. The Mexican-style fast food chain has fostered a reputation for fresh, locally-sourced ingredients.
Time - Three confirmed cases of typhoid fever have been traced to a Qdoba Mexican Grill in Firestone, Colo. The outbreak occurred in August and all three patients, two of which were hospitalized, have now recovered, CBS Denver reports. Epidemiologist Dr. Lisa Miller of the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment said the source of the outbreak was a food handler who spread the salmonella typhi bacteria. As for how it got into the food, Miller told CBS, “Someone sheds it in their feces and contaminated food or directly contaminated something that somebody else ingests.”
What the hell is going on out here? Chipotle is giving everyone E. coli, Qdoba is giving everyone typhoid. It’s like we’re 1 day away from caulking our wagon across the river if we want some casual Mexican food on a Wednesday night. People are always arguing “Chipotle or Qdoba”. Like you have to be one or the other and can’t use reason to go to one place when you want one particular food item, and the other when you want something else. For example, Qdoba has breakfast burritos and queso cheese. Chipotle has better guacamole. And now both will give you cancer. So to speak.
