WaPo - The Capitals last fell at home on Dec. 11, 2014, when forward Jason Chimera committed an overtime penalty that sank them against Columbus. Monday night, Chimera, Beagle and forward Tom Wilson set the tone early, potting a first-period goal off a designed draw play. Once Alex Tanguay equalized and Ovechkin put Washington ahead, for what eventually became his franchise record-setting 74th game-winner, so began his team’s harrowing tour through the third period, en route to its fifth victory in six games since the calendar turned. So, Trotz was later asked, since the Capitals have now snatched points in 17 of 18 games, surged to within four points of the Eastern Conference summit and continued to narrow the gap between them and second place in the Metropolitan Division, could this even be considered a hot streak any longer? Or had this become the norm?

Are you not entertained? Are you not bought in? Are points in 17 of 18 good? Or are you going to still make lame jokes about this team while avoiding all logic, stats, sights and sounds? Ovi isn’t even scoring at his normal clip and this team is unbeatable. Backstrom is easily a top 5 center in the league and didn’t even make the All Star Team. Holtby has played 100 games in a row and hasn’t had a down night. There’s not much else you can ask of this team. The 4th line with Beags is scoring. Carlson is moving the puck really well on the blue line. Kuzy’s hands are developing right in front of our eyes. We can talk about him for a second. His hands are ridiculous. He’s hit iron I think 100 times this year after doing something ridiculous to shake the D. It’s only a matter of time before his game really sets in and then it’ll be fireworks for him.

Tough test tomorrow against the Flyers, the last team to beat them when they drew a penalty in OT. If there is one place the Caps can improve on, it’s taking too many penalties, especially late in games. They’ve lost 2 games this year after taking penalties behind the play in OT. Getting the point is good, but not giving yourself a chance for the 2nd point is costly. Regardless, feels good to be only 4 points out of first in the East.
