This Video About What Causes Addiction Will Make You Think About It In A Whole New Light

For some reason lately I’ve been getting a little more intellectually curious in the afternoons, reading and watching random things in the hopes of filling my head with something vaguely useful instead of old Seinfeld quotes and Joffrey Lauvergne’s usage rate. So here and there I’m going to try to find some different stuff than usual and I thought this video from the pretty credible “In a Nutshell” YouTube channel that’s going viral about addiction would be a pretty interesting first one. A lot of anti-drug people like to talk about how X is a gateway drug or Y substance will get you hooked forever just by being in its presence but if you think about it for a second, what this video is saying makes a million times more sense. I’m not sure how well you can quantify a connection between “Lab rats get sad doing drugs alone so they do more drugs” and “Soldiers turn to heroin after facing mortality without a family support system” in a scientific way that balances out the chemical science driving addiction (and ignores the personal accountability aspect too), but the absence of fulfillment creating a need that has to be filled is a strong argument you don’t hear very often. Granted, Fat Bastard made it years ago, but still, the video is right in that we should think about it a little more with how we handle addiction as a society.

PS if you didn’t feel bad for that junkie rat dying alone in his cage, I don’t even want to know you. Poor fella just needed a little rat buddy to play catch with him or, at the very least, turn him over in his sleep so he didn’t choke on his own vomit and die at the hands of Walter White.
