TA- Everyone dreads that morning alarm clock. If it’s not coffee that inspires you to rise from bed before 7 a.m., it’s your kids rambunctiously shouting and screaming – obviously not affected by the early morning hours. While it’s safe to say most adults are deprived of sleep, another reason one might be less than optimistic about venturing to work at 8 a.m. is because it’s biologically unnatural. According to Oxford University researcher Dr. Paul Kelley, forcing staff to work before 10 a.m. is equivalent to torture. It is also making employees ill, exhausted, and stressed. He told the National Post: “Before the age of 55, the circadian rhythms of adults are completely out of sync with normal nine-to-five working hours, posing a “serious threat” to performance, mood and mental health.”  For this reason, Kelley believes there needs to be a world-wide change in work and school starting times so that they can fit within the natural clock of humans. Studies examining circadian rhythms have shown that the average 10-year-old will not fully focus on academic work until 8:30 a.m. According to the researcher, a 16-year-old should start at 10 a.m. for best results and university students should start at 11 a.m.

I’m so sold on this. I’m not one to go to rallies or march on Washington for causes I believe in but this might be the one where I take up the cause. Starting working at 10am needs to be the new cause. And I know you guys will say, “You’re a blogger. You don’t have a real job and you can wake up whenever you want.”  I will agree that it’s not totally a real job but the fact of the matter is I have to wake up just like the rest of you and that’s where the problem is.  No matter what your job is, waking up is absolutely hands down the worst part of any day. It wouldn’t matter if I got shot in the face walking down the street. I’d still say the worst part of that day was when my alarm went off and woke me from my sweet slumber. And you wanna know why getting up in the morning feels like torture? Because apparently it is.  Literally.  According to that study getting up and start working before 10am is torture. Waterboarding = waking up early in the morning. Science says so. So this is it. This is our Civil Rights movement. I’m sick and tired of seeing the people of this great nation forced to wake up early and be tortured like this. Let us wake up naturally.

PS- I use my iPhone as my alarm clock and the sound is Strum. If I’m out and about and somebody’s alarm accidental goes off with Strum, I lose it.  It’s like a Vietnam-style flashback when I hear it. It’s the closest I’ll probably ever come to committing murder. If one day I kill someone I’ll guarantee you it’ll be because of Strum.
