GFH - Former UND football player Dustin Iverson, who was dismissed from the program on Monday, was summoned Wednesday to appear before Grand Forks Municipal Court on charges of theft of property.

Iverson was identified as the suspect in the incident after reporting party and Scheels employee Derek Trom discovered two opened, empty Nike Dri-fit bicep band packages, valued at about $8 each, according to the affidavit.

Trom reviewed video surveillance footage and discovered the items had been stolen. Trom said he observed Iverson, whom Trom identified because he was wearing a UND football jersey, open the packages, remove the items, conceal them in his pants pocket and leave the store without attempting to pay for the items, the affidavit says.

Trom said he tentatively identified Iverson from the UND football team photograph, according to the affidavit.

The affidavit alleges Iverson re-entered the store later Friday, was confronted, and subsequently was identified by loss prevention specialists at Scheels.

Worst arrest and end of a college football career ever? Trying to think. Scanning through my mental bank of all the sports arrests I’ve covered over the years, and there have been some doozies…but getting yourself arrested and kicked off the team for stealing $16 worth of Nike bicep bands WHILE WEARING YOUR FOOTBALL JERSEY has got to be right up there at the top. I mean if you had just stolen the Nike stuff, I could have worked with that, could have easily framed this as one of my “hey Mark Emmert look what you’re doing to these poor college athletes you don’t pay, they’re forced to resort to stuffing $8 bicep bands in their pockets” blogs. But the wearing your personalized football jersey in front of surveillance cameras while doing it, I’m out – I don’t support stupidity like that, can’t do it.

And let’s be honest, a fullback at the University of North Dakota doesn’t have dreams and aspirations of the NFL or anything. Not like this red-flagged him off the draft boards – his best “career high” listed was 8 pass receptions for 53 yards in 2014. But that just makes the 4 years of college football that much more important. That’s the peak of your life right there, the best it gets, you’re a big man on campus and get to play some somewhat meaningful football with your boys. Annnnd you blew it to steal two 8 dollar Nike bicep bands while wearing your name and number on your back. That’s tough.
