The Red Sox have officially announced their new general manager, and his name is Mike Hazen. I love this hire, and you should, too.

Yeah, I recognize that the Red Sox needed a complete overhaul within the front office, and that means bringing in new blood, but they’ve already done that in hiring Dave Dombrowski. Hazen was the best option to become the new general manager of the Boston Red Sox. For those of you who aren’t familiar with who he is, he’s been with the organization for ten years, worked his way up from the bottom as the director of player development, to serving most recently as the assistant general manager to Ben Cherington.

He comes from an excellent scouting and player development background, which is funny because that’s exactly what they said about Cherington when he was hired prior to the 2012 disaster of a season. The only difference here is that Cherington had to answer to Larry Lucchino, whereas Hazen will have to answer to Dombrowski, which is certainly the lesser of two evils, one would think. And sure, Dombrowksi will ultimately have the final say on most everything that Hazen is involved in, but the Red Sox are in a much better position with a general manager who already knows the organization inside and out than if they had hired somebody from the outside.

In honor of the new hiring, here’s an interview that I did with Hazen back in 2010, talking about a Red Sox prospect that I hadn’t heard of yet. Yes, I realize that I looked like I was twelve and possibly addicted to meth.

Update: In addition to being the new Red Sox general manager, it looks like Hazen will also be playing first base. Brilliant! If you want something done right, you just have to do it yourself, and obviously save a ton of money in the process. You just don’t see ambition like that anymore.
