(Source) Sunday, December 12th 2004, Jesus Aparicio was in the car with his friends to celebrate his 18th birthday. But the car went out of the roadway. While his friends remained almost unscathed, Aparicio however went into a deep coma. The young boy of Seville was interrupted in his life and in his love for tennis. Especially in his love for his idol Roger Federer, who at that time was 23 years old and had won his fourth grand slam at Flushing Meadows. Jesus’s friends said that he wanted to meet meet the Swiss one day and that he was putting money aside to go to the 2005 Wimbledon.

There was however an unexpected but happy ending for Aparicio. On 27th August 2015, Jesus suddenly woke up and called his mother, with memories of his accident intact. He also received news about the current affairs in Spain and across the world, but he also didn’t hesitate to ask about Federer: “It came like a flash to my mind and I asked about Roger. I thought he had retired. When I knew that at 34-years, he is still playing and is number two in the world, I thought they were kidding me. When I heard that he reached 17 slam titles, I put my hands on my face.”

Jesus also had the pleasure to watch the US Open final between Novak Djokovic, total stranger to him, and Roger Federer at his home. “I was really surprised to see him play well, Djokovic is good.”  The Seville native was happy despite Federer’s defeat, especially because his dream to see the Swiss play live was still achievable: “I want to see his match before he retires, perhaps his 18th Slam.”

Listen man, real happy for you that you woke up from that long nap, but my God can you be lamer than being excited about Roger Federer still being good at tennis? Who gives a fuck about Tennis? Not only that but Roger Federer being good 11 years later isn’t that crazy is it? Tennis players play tennis forever. People actually say pick up playing tennis because it’s a sport you can play for the rest of your life. And I know it’s partially because you’re Spanish and don’t know any better, your life is fake sports and people killing Bulls, but even still, wouldn’t the big shock be the advent of iPhones or DVR or Facebook? But nah, we’re just happy Fed is still out there volleying for serve and losing in the Finals of every major. What a waste of a good Coma story, seriously, Tennis. Thank god this kid wasn’t a Tiger Woods fan.

Could you imagine going into an 11 year Coma tomorrow and missing the next 5 Cubs World Series Championships? I get chills thinking about it, terrifying. Only thing worse is going into a coma at age 18 and missing all of your 20’s. Worst timing ever.

PS

This may be just a twitter thing but I hate how people pretend Tennis is a real sport now. Every time there is a tournament people are flipping out about how incredible a match is. I’ve bet on Tennis before and I still can’t bring myself to watch it. Tennis, awful.
