Today Two Different NCAA Women's Games Featured Players Scoring on Their Own Baskets
Well now here's something you don't see every day. Northwestern State's Women's team trying to get the ball up court in the 1st quarter, facing a press, a simple cross court pass gets a [looks up nickname] Lady Demon's player turned around, and she hits a layup into her own team's understandably uncontested basket.
Why, you'll probably go the entire season and not see that again. And no, I'm just referring to those of you who don't plan on seeing any NCAA Women's Basketball of any kind. (You can keep your misogyny to yourself, mister.) I'm just saying a mistake like that is a very rare event, indeed.
Or, I spoke too soon. Because it not only happened again today in another game, the own-goal happened in the final seconds of an absolute wild one:
Turning a Southern Utah 61, New Mexico St. 60 game into what everyone - the players, the play-by-play guy, the graphics crew - thought was a 62-60 lead for NM St. into what was actually 63-60 lead for So. Utah with just 18.8 to go. And still, NMS still managed to pull off the win:
So technically, they scored the last three buckets of the game, and went 2-for-3 on picking the correct basket.
Now, a lesser man might use these two completely unconnected moments to jump to some wrong conclusions, or say something demeaning toward these athletes. If that's what you're here for, you've come to the wrong blog, my friend. I'm just here to point out the bizarre circumstances that would lead to this mistake happening twice in the same game, is all. I've heard it said about baseball and golf that every time you watch it or play it, there's a chance you're going to see something that's never happened before. Today was just such a day in NCAAW's hoops. And you may never see it again.
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to start my weekend. Which will be spent avoiding the Comments on this post. Happy Friday.
