Rashee Rice Filing For Bankruptcy With $3.5M in Debt as a 26-Year-Old Active NFL Player is Almost Impressive

ESPN – Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice filed for bankruptcy in federal court Wednesday, claiming he has more than $3.45 million in debts, according to federal court records.

Rice, who filed in the Northern District of Texas bankruptcy court, claimed more than $2.1 million of his debts are tied to varying plaintiffs suing him in civil litigations that have either been settled or are awaiting trial.

Rice, 26, has been sued by multiple individuals for his role in a high-speed multicar crash in Dallas in 2024 and an ex-girlfriend alleging he repeatedly assaulted her from 2023 to 2025.

In the filing, Rice claimed to have $677,054 in personal assets, including $421,825 in "deferred compensation." The filing claims Rice has $13,640 in his checking accounts. He claims to rent a residence and that he does not own any property.

Rice filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, which is for "individuals who have financial difficulty preventing them from paying their debts and who are willing to allow their non-exempt property to be used to pay their creditors," according to the bankruptcy filing. Rice claimed $39,241 of his personal assets to be nonexempt.

You don't see that one too much. Professional athletes filing for bankruptcy after a long career of living hundred-thousand-dollar paycheck to hundred-thousand-dollar paycheck is one thing.

That's a tale as old as time. But you've gotta fuck up something special to run out of money before the end of your rookie deal.

Rashee Rice is no bum either. Well, I suppose it depends on how you define bum. He's not a bum on the football field. When he's healthy, and has his mind right, and isn't suspended, he's a fine wide receiver. He's had some impressive stretches. At times, he's legitimately been a difference-maker for the Chiefs' offense. He won a damn Super Bowl his rookie year.

But boy did he fuck up. Despite the suspension-induced salary reductions, the man earned over $6M in less than 4 years of football. But when you crash your Lambo in a high-speed police chase, violate probation, and face civil lawsuit for allegedly abusing your ex-girlfriend.. that $6M will go quick. That's how a 26-year-old NFL player ends up filing for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, reporting $3.45M in total debts against $13k in his checking account, less than $700K in personal assets, and putting up his Super Bowl ring as collateral to pay lawyer fees.

At least he's still good at football! Rashee Rice will be an unrestricted free agent after this season. He's going to sign another sizable contract. NFL teams have had NO PROBLEM paying more money to worse people, so long as they can help them win. Hell, you could probably argue that filing for bankruptcy is a "good thing" for his career. At least from the team's perspective. You know Rashee Rice needs his money. He can't afford not to play good football.

I'd wish you good luck, Rashee Rice, but I feel like that would be a bad look. But if you can manage to stay out of the courts, I'm sure your money will be right in no time. Just keep running fast and catching footballs. That's all that matters in The League.
