The Fire Sale Has Begun – Colts Trade 8-Time Pro Bowler Quenton Nelson to Seattle For a Few Bags of Peanuts
Sure. Makes sense. The Colts' season is already lost. Daniel Jones has been a massive waste of time. Well, actually... that's not entirely true. Daniel Jones was the final nail in the coffin that got rid of long-time Indianapolis-based terrorist Chris Ballard for good. So I guess Daniel Jones has done some good for the franchise. Regardless, now that the Colts are 2-5, and Chris Ballard has been fired, it was only a matter of time before they started trading pieces. Pieces they've been holding onto, and trying to keep relevant via a train of veteran journeyman quarterbacks (and one Anthony Richardson) ever since Andrew Luck retired.
Quenton Nelson is the first out the door. For an 8-time Pro Bowl left guard, surely the Colts got something worthwhile in return.
Well then. That's... underwhelming. Quenton Nelson isn't THAT old. He's only 30. I'd have thought there'd be an NFL Super Bowl contender who'd offer a little more than next to nothing in exchange for a pretty significant upgrade to their offensive line. Chris Fucking Ballard traded two years of first-round picks for Sauce Gardner. I don't exactly know how to calculate the difference, but I don't think a 25-year-old Sauce is THAT MUCH more valuable than a future Hall of Famer only 5 years his senior.
Whatever. At the end of the day, the trade deadline is exactly two weeks from today. Quenton Nelson is on an expiring contract. I suppose the Colts got something in exchange for him. And at this point, losses are more valuable to the Colts than wins. So you could make the argument that trading Quenton Nelson for a used condom would be a net positive for the Colts franchise.
I don't know who's doing the negotiating for the Colts nowadays. I assume it's interim GM Ed Dodds. But whoever it is, please try to do a little better when you inevitably offload Jonathan Taylor. I know we should probably get rid of him. I know his family is already low-key planning on it...
But I love Jonathan Taylor. I don't want to see him go for a buffet of 3-7th rounders. That would be sad. I know the Colts need draft capital, but they could at least get one 2nd rounder in a package for our very best player… please?
Thanks for the memories, Quenton Nelson. I hope you win that Super Bowl the Colts never could.
