'Either People Are Illiterate Or You're A Bad Writer' - Kevin Willard Is An Incredible College Hoops Villain, Goes At Reporters Who Are Pissed Villanova Left The Big 5
We're doing college hoops on a Friday, folks. People are losing their minds because Villanova pulled out of the Big 5 and it's somehow a crime. Look, I grew up in Big 5 country. It doesn't have any juice. There's nothing that helps Villanova in playing in it. They only get hurt because Temple, St. Joe's, La Salle, Drexel and Penn all kinda stink. There's no quality win. There's nothing that can help Villanova by playing in this besides 'tradition.'
And I get it. People love tradition. I love tradition. But we live in a world where big time schools aren't going on the road to small schools anymore. You play on a neutral court. The fact is the Big 5 doesn't mean anything except for the smaller schools in Philly who have a chance to beat Villanova. If we were back in the day when Temple was relevant and St. Joe's was a constant Tournament team, then, yeah, there'd be something there. Instead the Big 5 had to go to a triple header just to try and get people to watch it and keep some national relevance.
Naturally people just blame Kevin Willard for being an asshole. I love his response more than anything else:
Willard is just such an awesome villain in college hoops. This is what an old Big East coach would say in this situation too. We all pine for the old Big East days, it was built on coaches who had personalities and were kind of known assholes. You had the Maryland situation and how he left for Nova (no-brainer). I think I love Kevin Willard. I'd much rather a coach do this, where he actually starts to explain the situation, goes at reporters and doesn't just hold back.
Feels good to have pissy coaches and fans arguing again. That's how you know the season is about to start.
