The College Football Playoff Has Promised To Give Us at Least Five Whole Seasons at 24 Teams Before Expanding Again

You would think the third season of a 12-team College Football Playoff would still be considered a bit of a feeling-out period. Everyone is still getting used to the expanded format, but we've pretty much accepted the new landscape of college football and most people like it.

Well in actuality, we have not only scrapped the 12-team model entirely and doubled the field beginning next year, but the CFP is already looking forward to when it will be able to expand again past 24 teams. It seems they don't see a way to make that happen under the current television contract with ESPN, but as soon as that sucker is over, we can continue rolling full steam ahead!

The brazenness with which these bureaucrats — who couldn't name you 10 stadiums in the sport they're actively killing — continue to eradicate everything that has made college football special for a century in furtherance of something nobody else wants is infuriating. I wish I could say I even have an idea of a number of teams at which they'd stop this insanity, but I really don't know that one exists. If 12 is good, 24 is better and 48 is outstanding.

We already have a college sport with a large postseason tournament that allows teams to lose 40 percent of their regular season games and get in. Guess how many people care about the regular season of that sport?

I'd imagine we'll see expansion to 32 teams in '32 because it's just too perfect, but then do we make a pit stop at 48 for a few years or just bulldoze straight ahead to 64?

The good news for those who have tried to save college football is we will only have to watch the 24-team Playoff for five years. The bad news is that after that, it will get much worse.
