'If We Don't Play With Them, We'll Play Against Them' - Bill Self's Argument For Signing Trey Kaufman-Renn Is Everything That's Dumb In College Sports Now
This isn't an anti-Bill Self blog. This is an anti-what the fuck is going in college hoops right now blog. Trey Kaufman-Renn playing for Kansas is everything that's dumb in college sports. He spent 5 years in college already. He cemented himself as a Purdue legend or at least an all-time Purdue player. He then went and got drafted by the Wolves. That happened
Now that we have all these lawsuits and trying to figure out who is eligible to play and these guys coming back to school TKR took advantage. His argument was literally that he could make more money this year in college than the NBA
It's disgusting to see TKR playing for Kansas. He spent 5 years at Purdue. He shouldn't be wearing another jersey. This wasn't a transfer after sophomore year type thing. But what Self said is what's wrong in the sport. Either you go be a villain and land one of these guys or you play against them. It's why everything is so fucked up right now. All the NCAA had to do was say starting in the 2027-28 season the 5-for-5 rule is in play. That gives coaches the entire season/offseason to plan for it.
Instead every coach said fuck it, we'll just find ways to do it this year.
And don't get me wrong. We're all still going to watch because we cheer for laundry. But I hate everything about this specific thing. I hate that every day there's a lawsuit report about who is eligible and then people fighting about whether or not they'll actually play. Part of it is on the coaches. Not just Self, but every coach who went and got one of these guys when the rule was already out there. Then they found the judges who ruled in favor of them. The NCAA fucked up years ago by always being reactive instead of proactive. It's not just a one-way street here.
So, yeah, TKR is on Kansas now. A guy who we've seen at Purdue forever. I hate that. Be a legend at your school and then go play pro. I kind of just miss those days.
