The Spurs And Thunder Getting Into A Scrap On Night 1 Of The Season Is Awesome, Need More Teams To Truly Hate Each Other Like They Do
I know it's easy to just say these guys hate each other or something along those lines. We basically beg for it or overtalk about it when we feel like there's the tiniest bit of animosity. We don't need to do that with the Thunder and Spurs. These two teams fucking hate each other. That's something we need more of in sports.
Look, I've said it before. I'm old at this point in my blogging life. I grew up where teams and players hated each other and it was just normal. I witnessed the buddy-buddy era come in and overtake everything we knew about sports. That's not to say we didn't have any of that (Isiah and Magic kissed each other) during the glory days of it all. It was just the hate and the rivalries really stuck out. They didn't feel neutered. If you were friends with someone on the other team, us fans didn't know about it (unless you kissed each other on the court).
That's why I loved seeing this scrap yesterday. I loved seeing Chet and Wemby having real hate.
I just want more of this. I'm not saying you need to get into a full on brawl during games. But, I want to watch a game that you can just tell feels different. Sure, it helps we're talking about 2 of the better teams in the league. But it shouldn't matter. This is how sports used to be. You'd have the team at the mountain top, the next group up and they'd hate each other for a couple years while playing great games.
It was game 1 and you had everyone with the last name Williams getting a technical. You had Grant Hill talking about how the Thunder were sticking up for Chet after game 7 of last year. You had everyone starting to get pissy, of course not punches, but it's a start. It's what I sports to get back to. I want to turn on a game and just go yeah those teams are rivals they should hate each other vs celebrating when two teams act like it.
