“Nobody Calls a Game Better Than Troy Aikman” Sure Sounds Like Michael Wilbon Has Taken A Side In ESPN's Monday Night Football Booth Drama
"You know who calls a game better than Troy Aikman...NOBODY calls a game better than Troy Aikman."
Is this an ESPN employee taking a shot at his bosses while also propping up a likely soon-to-be-ex-ESPN employee?
Giphy Images.Oh man, too bad. I'm sure ESPN was hoping we'd go the next FIVE MONTHS without this becoming a big storyline in its own building.
Yep, ESPN has its first Super Bowl this season. And Joe Buck and Troy Aikman are scheduled to be in the booth. They've been teammates for about 25 years, calling games together since their time at Fox.
Last month, Buck got a fat contract extension for the next six seasons. Aikman did not, and he all but confirmed he would be a free agent after the season.
It appears Mike Wilbon has taken a side in Joe Buck v. Troy Aikman. Or ESPN vs. Troy Aikman. Maybe it's a little of both?
I'm sure there is some tension in that booth, but I gotta be honest, I didn't notice it last night during 49ers/Commanders. Trust me, I was looking for it. I guess people think this open was a big deal? I'm not seeing it. Does Troy really look all that different than he usually does? He always seems a little tense to me, and that's okay.
But like any breakup, people will take sides. Sure sounds like Wilbon is Team Aikman. He could've just not made that comment at the end of PTI. His willingness to do so says a lot about his opinion of ESPN's apparent decision to break up what many consider one of the best TV teams in sports.
It's been a week, and we still don't know what the MAIN issue was with ESPN giving Aikman his own extension. Do they love Greg Olsen? Did Aikman ask for the bag, and did ESPN balk? Is there a bigger issue between Buck and Troy?
But it's only been a week. And you can bet that as the season goes on, more ESPN voices will have their own opinion. Michael Wilbon won't be the last person at the company to comment on this.
And as the season goes on, more dirt will start to fly. Is there a chance that it gets so bad that Aikman leaves during the season? That would be wild. Last night seemed fine, but you can't rule it out.
