Nearly $1 Million in Cards Were Stolen Out of a FedEx Truck Parked Outside PSA Headquarters
The Athletic — More than 200 packages containing trading cards valued at nearly $1 million were stolen from a FedEx truck parked outside the California headquarters of grading giant Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA) last week, the Santa Ana Police Department confirmed to The Athletic on Monday.
A FedEx truck parked near PSA’s Santa Ana, Calif., grading center was broken into on Oct. 13, the SAPD said. Two pallets bearing an estimated 100 packages each were stolen from the truck while a third pallet had an estimated 50 packages stolen. It’s currently unclear how many total trading cards, which had been graded by PSA and were being shipped back to their owners, were included in the stolen packages.
PSA reported to police the two stolen pallets had an approximate value of $963,000. A value for the additional 50 packages from the third pallet wasn’t immediately available, as PSA is still in the process of confirming which packages were stolen.
What a nightmare for a very unfortunate group of card collectors. People sent cards in to be graded by PSA, likely waited months to get them back and then had them all stolen out of a FedEx truck that a driver left unattended for at least an hour, according to this report. Insanity.
Obviously, when things like this are done through the mail, there's always a risk of something terrible happening. But this wasn't a few packages getting lost in a warehouse somewhere. A truck driver left his vehicle with seven figures worth of cards in it unattended for 60-90 minutes and was presumably surprised to come back and find everything had been stolen.
I feel like that was an easy one to see coming, boss.
It seems the people who had cards stolen are already having a difficult time dealing with PSA and trying to recoup all the value that was lost may be pretty tough.
If everything that has been reported turns out to be true, it seems like one FedEx driver really put PSA and hundreds of people in an impossible situation with little recourse. Hopefully everything turns out for the best, but what a raw deal for everyone involved.
"Lock the truck," has to be covered day one in FedEx school.
