Street Fighter Is Pretty Dumb But At Least It Knows That

Street Fighter isn't as unbearable as Mortal Kombat. I'll give it that. Below is a mini-review for that as well as Whalefall, You Can See Everything, The Social Reckoning and Animals. One of those movies is one of the three best movies of 2026. HINT: It's not Street Fighter.

The Street Fighter game was fun because it was stupid but campy with cool characters and didn’t take itself seriously. That’s exactly what this movie is. I just don’t want to play the video game for 119 minutes.

Having said that, this understands its mission so much better than the Mortal Kombat movies. They take themselves way too seriously and are missing the light touch this has. This knows it’s weird and leans into it.

If you are someone who isn’t familiar with the game, this is a giant stay away. There’s nothing for you here. But if you enjoyed the games, this might be worth the watch. It’s faint praise but this is better than an average video game movie.

Never has a movie been more like its own character as this is to Ken Masters.

STREET FIGHTER: C

Whalefall is store brand 127 Hours but with daddy issues. That still makes for a pretty good watch.

Austin Abrams does a nice job carrying the entirety of another movie right after Resident Evil. Both movies are good but for his next movie, I hope he has some more scenes with other actors. He’s good here when he’s with Josh Brolin.

There’s not a ton to discuss beyond what the movie shows us. Guy with recently deceased dad (who he had a complicated relationship with) gets stuck in a whale. The dead dad stuff is always going to work on some level for me.

This is worth the watch and just because something has a very direct message doesn’t mean it’s not still interesting.

WHALEFALL: B-

You Can See Everything hits on so many themes from such an unusual place, you’re left almost in a state of disbelief when it’s over. You’re left to question love, truth, perception, fairness and more. The only thing you know for certain is that Nathan Fielder is a genius.

There have been three great movies so far in 2026. This is one of them.

At times this feels almost voyeuristic; like we shouldn’t be there watching this. At times, it almost plays like a whodunnit where you thirst for more knowledge and access. Fielder continues to be on a plane of his own. He’s doing things that are too brilliant to even really be copied yet it feels so accessible.

In a world where actual truth and fact feels like it’s further away than ever, this movie asks if it was ever there at all.  Absolutely brilliant.

YOU CAN SEE EVERYTHING: A

There’s half of a good movie within The Social Reckoning. I found the information about how Facebook made decisions to amplify negative posts to be an interesting look at tech business. The movie just loses its way the more self-righteous it gets. And boy, can Aaron Sorkin get self-righteous.

Even associating this as a sequel to The Social Network does this movie a huge disservice. That movie is one of the greatest movies of the century. This feels like it could have been made for cable.

Jeremy Strong, who is a very good actor, is horrendous here. He plays Mark Zuckerberg as some sort of villainous cartoon character. It’s such a giant drop off from Jesse Eisenberg’s complicated character.

Aaron Sorkin can be a great screenwriter but it’s clear he needs a director to keep him in check.

THE SOCIAL RECKONING: C

Animals is perfectly fine Netflix trash. The bigger question is why is Ben Affleck making Netflix trash? This is same guy who directed Best Picture winner Argo? What the fuck?

There is nothing in this movie you haven’t seen before right down to the twists. That’s not to say it’s bad. You’re getting solid performances by Affleck, Gillian Anderson and Steve Yuen. It’s all OK.

But my mind can’t help but drift to why? Live By Night was worse than this but at least that had some level of ambition. It was trying to be something and failed. This isn’t even trying.

After this and The Rip this year, has Ben Affleck stopped giving a shit?
