The Eagles Are Placing Jalen Hurts On IR And That Should Just About Do It For This Trainwreck Of A Season
Brooke Sutton. Getty Images.I'll be honest--I really don't know what I was expecting this Eagles season to look like. Last year was a mess, but the Eagles have been doing this fun little "wild card exit, Super Bowl appearance" on and off situation. The team has a new offensive coordinator, no AJ Brown, but maybe they just needed a breath of fresh life in the building. Plus, the NFC East sucks ass so anything is possible. Was I expecting a Super Bowl?
Either way, I wasn't expecting this absolute monstrosity of a season.
It seems like Saquon has been injured since the very first time he touched the ball this year. DeVonta Smith hasn't been healthy. The offensive line was putrid to begin with, but pretty much everybody besides Jordan Mailata is dead. Lane Johnson decided to just retire right before a game. And now on top of everything else that has already happened this season, Jalen Hurts is heading to IR and will miss at least the next 4 weeks.
If there has ever been a time to spend your Sunday afternoons apple picking and going to farmers markets, this next month as an Eagles fan is a perfect opportunity.
Obviously you hope everything goes well for Jalen Hurts from a health standpoint. I'm not a doctor but it sounds like everything is more or less just being super cautious about the situation. From a football standpoint, I know there have been fans who have wanted to see Tanner McKee out there for a while now. Philly has the weird, borderline unhealthy, obsession with backup quarterbacks. But the Eagles are about to send Tanner McKee out onto the field behind at least 3 offensive linemen who wouldn't be starting on any other team in the league. He'll be handing the ball off to Dameon Pierce, who probably still doesn't have all of his clothes in Philly yet. His main weapons will be Dontayvion Wicks and Darius Cooper. The Eagles are throwing out the most JV team in the history of the National Football League.
It's going to be ugly. The past few weeks have been extremely frustrating to watch, but this could very easily become an unwatchable product. Even with how terrible the NFC East is this year, 4 weeks pretty much kills the Eagles season. They would be 2-7 heading into the bye week. Maybe there is a world where 8-9 gets you into the playoffs out of the NFC East? But if the season is already that out of reach at the bye week, then maybe you just start shutting guys down early.
Which would make this season even more complicated because we've never really got a chance to see what Sean Mannion can do as an offensive coordinator. The offensive line was decimated, so many weapons were injured, and he's been stuck in the press box this whole time. Was this just a disastrous season, or does he suck at his job? We literally have no idea. And then there's the Nick Sirianni dilemma. Nick has proven multiple times over the last few weeks that he doesn't do anything to actually help this team. If anything, he holds them back. The only reason the Eagles have had success during his time here is because of the team Howie has put together for him. You'd have to fire Nick Sirianni after this year, but the Eagles just seem so hesitant to shit can the guy.
Flyers haven't won a game in over 170 days. The Phillies are a joke and are just running the same joke of a team back next year. And pretty much the entire Eagles roster is dead. It's hard not to start wondering if maybe the LeBron Curse is real.
P.S. -- Michael Robinson should have stopped talking when he said "I don't know nothing". Because that's the only accurate thing he said during this whole take. What an absolute dumbass. Maybe TV networks should stop hiring guys with CTE.
