Antonio Banderas And Nic Cage Are Officially On Board For True Detective Season 5

The fifth season of True Detective has cast its leads.

Nicolas Cage and Antonio Banderas will star in the HBO anthology’s next season, which is set to begin filming in 2027. Both stars have been rumored to be attached to the show for some time: Cage was first reported to be in talks for a lead role in the summer of 2025, and speculation about Banderas joining True Detective first surfaced late last year.

HBO (newly under the Skydance umbrella following the close of the Paramount-Warner Bros. Discovery merger) is keeping story details locked away for now, but it did offer up character names for the two stars: Cage will play Henry Logan, and Banderas will play Rai Garcia.

Let's start with the good before getting to the not so good.

The good is that this is an incredible pairing of actors. These two have a mountain of experience and, at least in my mind, were putting out the same kinda movies throughout my childhood. And if you think of them more for their goofy personas, I can promise you that they have recent, high level dramatic work as well. In my opinion, Cage could have won an Oscar for how great his performance in 'Pig' was and I'd put Banderas supporting role in 'Tony' among the best of 2026 so far. Seeing them get to do anything akin to the season 1 dynamic between McConaughey/Harrelson would be an absolute dream.

Now for the not so good. Issa López, who was the showrunner on True Detective: Night Country, is returning to run this season as well. Like some, I was pretty excited for that entry. Getting up into the bleak landscape of Alaska with an actress as talented as Jodi Foster? Sign me up! And through the first few episodes, it worked! Then came the finale. It's been out for a while so I don't feel too bad about spoiling.

The whole mystery in this season revolved around how a bunch of scientists in a remote research station were found butt-naked, frozen to death outside of the station and nobody could figure out why. The answer was that a bunch of 60 year old maids performed a seal team 6 raid, forcing them all out at gunpoint. One of the most dumbfounding endings to a true crime series I've ever seen.

Anybody who signed off on that decision is not someone who I trust. I'm perfectly happy to be proven wrong, but my expectations have lowered.
