Wemby Reportedly Refusing To Talk To The Media About The Spurs Finals Loss Is Beyond Soft If True

Now entering Year 4, there is no denying that Wemby is one of the best and most impactful basketball players on the planet. Given the production, the highlights, the success, the impact metrics, and the individual awards, I think that's a pretty safe statement to make. I wouldn't exactly call that a hot take.

However, coming off his first playoff run, there are certainly areas that require some improvement moving forward. All the dirty plays? That shit was lame. Especially since neither he nor the NBA showed any sort of accountability when those things happened. His late game play? That certainly is going to have to improve if the Spurs are going to become the Dynasty that many think is in their future. Way too many instances of Wemby disappearing when it mattered most, but again, this was his first playoff run as a young player. You have to go through pain before you get to glory, we see that all the time.

Then you have stuff like this, where apparently Wemby is now refusing to talk about his Finals loss and the role he played in the Spurs fumbling a Larry?

Now wait a goddamn minute. That is not how things work. In fact, that might be the softest thing I've ever heard from this caliber of player. Unfortunately, you don't get to pretend that your failures or shortcomings don't exist. Did we not see what happened to LeBron after the 2011 Finals? I saw Jayson Tatum be crucified for years following his underperformance in the 2022 NBA Finals. Hell, Windy legit went on TV and said that was part of the reason he couldn't win the 2024 regular season MVP!

Do we not remember when Luka had to do a legit sit-down interview to promise to try on defense after Windy crushed him on National TV for being a dogshit defender?

You don't think Luka had to deal with the media when it came to getting his ass whooped and being a gigantic cone defensively in his Finals loss?

This is how it works! Especially when you're at the level of player LeBron/Wemby/Tatum/Luka etc are in. The fact is the Spurs choked and Wemby was at the center of a lot of it, yet he somehow is now refusing to talk about it or be asked questions about it? Let's just call it what it is. That shit is the very definition of soft

Because here's what I do know. If the Spurs had pulled it out and won the Finals after Wemby gave this quote, do we think he'd be willing to talk about the Finals in October 2026?

Of course he would! But because things didn't exactly work out that way for Wemby, now he's refusing to talk about it? Again, SOFT. And I say this as someone who loves watching Wemby and believes all the praise he gets is warranted. But you can't have it both ways. You can't show up for the good while everyone is calling you a generational player/Face Of The NBA/etc but then run and hide when things go south. Fuck that.

Part of the gig when you're the best player/MVP candidate/Face Of The NBA etc is facing the music when things don't go your way. It's handling the media and all their bullshit that comes with it. You can give nothing but PR answers to those questions, that's fine. But what you can't do is run and hide just because you were on the losing end. Because we sure as shit know Wemby wouldn't be acting this way had the Spurs won and he was being praised for winning a title. If you want the praise when things go your way, then you have to be willing to deal with the shit that comes when they don't. That's how things have always been, and Wemby is no exception.
