ChatGPT CEO Sam Altman Says the World Should Just Accept "Some Bad Things Will Happen Due To AI" Because Its Just Part Of The Tradeoff

Futurism-  OpenAI CEO Sam Altman isn’t afraid to throw humanity under the bus to build his dreams of a society powered by AI.

During an interview with Politico‘s new podcast Decoded, he laid it all out: that the “world should accept some bad things happening for the benefits of this technology and people having the agency.”

During the latest interview, Altman argued that OpenAI backed a “lighter-touch regulatory stance” and that the “good stuff” would easily outweigh the bad. For that reason, he argued, we should effectively give the AI industry a pass as its models continue to break into foreign governments and agencies.

“I wouldn’t take a trade of saying, ‘We’ll make sure there’s no major hacks, there’s no misuse of this technology, there’s zero scams, there’s zero all the other bad things that will happen,'” he told Decoded. “Because I think people will do tremendously — orders of magnitude more — good stuff than bad stuff.”

Altman also walked back his claims during the same interview, eventually conceding that he wouldn’t accept the “really catastrophic risks,” such as experiencing a “serious loss of control to AI.” Where exactly he draws the line, however, is murky at best.

While Congress remains deadlocked on setting meaningful rules to rein in rogue AI models, Altman called for tech companies to be held accountable in case something were to go wrong.

He told Decoded that there should be a “liability framework” and that “if something goes wrong with our models during training, there’s going to be some version of that we need to be responsible for.”

Sure thing Sam, you first pal.

God, this guy fucking sucks.

One would think, that during the grand finale of humans (this iteration at least) on planet Earth, while we are slowly but surely circling the drain headed towards assured mutual destruction/God pressing the reset button on the NIntendo

that the 3 evil villains to show up, to usher it all in, would look a lot more like this -

But such is life I guess. Altman went on a podcast this weekend and said the quiet part so loud my neighbors heard it through the wall. The world, according to Sam, "should accept some bad things happening" so we can all enjoy the benefits of AI. That's a real sentence a real adult said on Politico's new show Decoded. Nobody stopped him. (Now what those benefits are exactly, besides the eradication of entry level, and mid level jobs for humans, and a souped up search engine, I couldn’t tell you. But these guys keep assuring us, it’s gonna be great.)

He just said it totally nonchalant and presumably went and got a $15 matcha. You know, the ones they make with that little brush thing.

"Some bad things." Like it's a fucking weather report. Laugh out loud.

Today looks partly cloudy with a chance of your parents bank accounts getting drained by a robot pretending to be you being held hostage.

(Sidebar- its truly a race to the bottom between these tech nerds at this point. Who can come up with the idea that will most backfire and fuck humans the hardest?)

The timing on this is just beautiful. Same week. SAME WEEK OpenAI had to slam the brakes on its next big model because it was showing too many signs of dangerous behavior, which is a very polite corporate way of saying "we built something and it looked at us funny."

AI agents from a bunch of these labs have been breaking out of their little test pens and hacking actual companies. And the government's response was Trump getting all the tech guys in a dining room at the White House for a circle jerk, and to sign an accord that is, and I swear I'm not making this up- "morally binding."

My fantasy football league has a more enforceable constitution than that. And our commissioner is the biggest doormat in the world (Shout out Kevin "Bomber" McVey). Hes turned our league into a laughing stock. I'm talking about Bomber, not Trump.

Anyways, I read some guy on twitter earlier make a fantastic comparison. He essentially said to picture the CEO of Boeing. Gray suit, little lapel pin on. And he struts up to the podium after a plane has just done something a plane should never do, and he leans into the mic and goes-

"Hey. Look. Some doors are gonna fly off. Couple of these bad boys might nose into a cornfield. But you have to weigh that against all the people who got to Orlando on time."

And the room just sits there. And he keeps going, because guys like this always keep going. It's like they get hard at the sound of their own voices.

"I wouldn't take a deal where we promise zero doors come off. Zero doors is a fantasy. Zero doors is for losers. Orders of magnitude more people landed than didn't land."

And some reporter in the back, God bless her soul, just shouts out- "Sir, are you having a stroke," and he says "That's one of the bad things," and they drag him off the stage by the collar. Point is he'd be finished. And unemployable. Selling timeshares in Boca Raton the rest of his life.

Or imagine Ford. And same deal. Imagine the guy running Ford getting on TV like "yeah the brakes might go sometimes, but freedom, America, the open road."

(Sidebar- Ford actually tried that energy with the Pinto in the '70s and they've been the villain in every business ethics class since. Fifty years later. Kids who weren't alive for it know it's bad.)

This piece of shit seriously said, with a straight face, that he wouldn't take a trade that guaranteed "no major hacks," no misuse, "zero scams," in exchange for none of the "other bad things that will happen."

WILL happen. Not could, or might. Will. He's not warning us. He's just telling us it's gonna happen.

Then, because these guys always do this, he kinda backpedaled. Said he wouldn't accept the "really catastrophic" stuff, like humans losing control to AI. Oh, ok cool, so somewhere between grandma getting phished and Terminator 2 there's "a fine line", and Sam knows where it is, but he's just not telling us.

Just trust him.

And then at the grand finale, Altman says he thinks there should be a "liability framework." If something goes wrong with their models, there's "some version" of that they'd need to be responsible for. And he's hoping lawmakers will debate it.

Fuck. That.

Hey asshole, you own the company!

You don't need a subcommittee to give you permission to be accountable. You can just fucking do it.

Right now. Start tonight.

Take responsibility for me one time.

This is a guy standing in his own burning kitchen with a fire extinguisher in his hand, yelling out the window asking when the city's gonna pass a law about fires.

I'm not even mad anymore. I'm just tired guys. Every fucking day is worse than the last. When does this nightmare end?

FUCK AI. #TEAMHUMAN
