Colorado State DC Tyson Summers Got Fired MID-GAME Against Oregon State
Coloradoan — Did Jim Mora and Colorado State football make a defensive coordinator change during a game?
CSU defensive coordinator Tyson Summers was on the sideline calling plays early in the game Oct. 3 against Oregon State.
But by later in the first half, Summers couldn’t be seen on the sideline. Cornerbacks coach Trent Matthews was wearing a blue hoodie signaling plays in to the defense, as Summers previously did. Kenny McClendon, who is listed as the co-defensive coordinator, associate head coach and defensive line coach, had a play sheet in hand while the defense was on the field.
After being hired as Colorado State's defensive coordinator prior to the 2025 season, Tyson Summers actually spent the latter half of last season as the Rams' interim head coach following the firing of Jay Norvell. When Jim Mora Jr. was hired to replace Norvell, he kept Summers as his DC, but that arranged marriage seems to have only lasted a few weeks and ended unceremoniously in the middle of a game.
Whatever happened between Mora and Summers today was not the first altercation the pair has been involved in this season.
The Rams gave up 56 points in their loss to Oregon State on Saturday, their third straight week allowing 41 or more.
The good news for Summers is he got fired during a home game. Just pack your stuff, text your wife to meet you at the car and you're home by the middle of the third quarter with a buyout check on the way in the next 30 days. I'd say he came out on the better end of this deal.
