Not In Wisconsin Anymore: Giannis Had His First Welcome To Miami Moment By Being Held Hostage In His House By A Massive Iguana

While I'm sure run-ins like this are par for the course when you live in Southern Florida, allow me to say HOLY SHIT. I get that if you're a Floridian you probably don't even bat an eye at something like this, but I can't lie, I feel like I would have a pretty similar reaction to Giannis upon seeing that iguana. I mean let's be honest, that's a modern day dragon. Just look at that thing! I watched Game Of Thrones, I know what a baby dragon looks like, and that my friends, is a baby dragon. I know there are dragon iguanas or whatever, but I'm fairly certain that's the real thing.

I'll also admit, hand up, I had no idea iguanas' tails were that long. I think that's why my brain is leaning more toward a baby fire-breathing dragon than a regular iguana. That seems suspiciously long for my liking, but then again I'm not exactly an iguana expert. I've had little baby salamanders in my backyard and stuff, but that's about the extent of my knowledge on the species. All I know is if you're just minding your own business and you look out your window and see THAT thing looking at you, it's more than fair to be a little spooked.

But hey, this is what Giannis signed up for! His first "Welcome to Miami" moment I suppose. I'm sure he thought he was headed to South Beach for some nice weather, a coach who actually knows what he's doing after dealing with Doc these last few years, and an opportunity to try and get the Heat back to a level where they are actually competing for titles. Little did he know that while all that may be true, he's also going to have to deal with massive iguanas at his house. I doubt Pat Riley had that as part of the sales pitch but oh well, the ink is dry on the contract and assuming Giannis is going to sign an extension, this is his life for the foreseeable future. Pretty different from things in Wisconsin, I would imagine.

In terms of Giannis and the Heat, I am getting the sense that the internet is being pretty weird about their roster and how they profile entering the new NBA season. People seem to be on either end of the spectrum where you either think they are now at the top of the East and a legit title threat, or you think they are massively overrated and are destined for the Play In.

My view of them is pretty simple:

Last year, the Heat ranked 14th in defense with a 113.6 DRTG. They had a 111.3 DRTG in 1,192 minutes of Herro/Powell both off the floor, and now add Giannis (and an older Klay etc). I think it's fair to assume they finish with around a 111-112 DRTG, which last season would have ranked 4-10th (112.5 was 5th)

The question is where you think they settle offensively (last year 115.8 ORTG). Giannis teams have been around 115-117 ORTG the last few years, but that was under Doc. 117 was good for 10th last season. A 117 ORTG / 112 DRTG has MIA at around a +5.0 net. A +5 net tends to translate to a 48-52 win range in most cases. A little better offense or defense and that has them closer to +6 or higher, which is when you get to 53+ wins. I think the 2026 Rockets are a good comp (117.5 ORTG / 112.1 DRTG / +5.4 net / 8th offense / 6th defense / 52 wins

People expect win totals as a whole to go down in the East, so high 40s/low 50s might put you in the 3-6 seeds. Things will probably come down to H2H tiebreakers when it comes to final seeding. It's possible teams right above the Play In line win about 48-52 games, which is where I think the Heat will live with normal health.

That is of course if Giannis ever finds a way to muster up the courage to leave his house. Because once he does, the Heat are getting a pretty decent player to now lead their franchise
