Everyone Wants A Star: Robert Saleh Claims The 49ers Loved Cam Skattebo, Wanted To Draft Him Before The Giants Snagged Him

Now just wait a goddamn second here. This was the draft when Skattebo went: 

They could have taken him at 100! That's 5 spots before the Giants made the genius pick. I assume he's talking about pick 113? But, the fact of the matter is this is kind of what everyone does in sports. You find a guy who went a little later, looks like a star and then you get the stories where everyone loves him. Then why didn't you draft him? It's not like Skattebo went super early. You had plenty of chances to take him if you really loved him.

I don't doubt that the 49ers wanted him. He fits what the 49ers do in the offense, and hell, they took a running back in this past draft. It's clear they wanted to add some protection with Christian McCaffrey. But, lying about the Giants snagging him right before you were on the clock when it was 8 picks away and you just had a pick is coaching 101. It lets everyone know, hey, we also liked this guy. It just didn't work out. You still get to sound good, but he's ours. In fact we need Cam Sakttebo more than ever right now. We have no Jaxson Dart. We are at another low point because of that. Actually, we're at such a low point because of how much of a high we had after week 1. Now we need Cam Skattebo to save our offense enough so Winston can throw the ball until we find another quarterback. Goddamn, it's depressing all over again. 

Whatever, at least we outsmarted the 49ers. Chalking that up as a win.
