This Freddy Couples Hole-In-One at a Closest-To-Pin Contest is The Coolest Thing a Person Can Do on a Golf Course
There are levels to golf. In fact, there are 3 of them.
Level 1 – Learning to golf
Level 2 – Caring about your golf game
Level 3 – Acceptance that you're not getting any better and are just there to have fun
I guess quitting golf entirely would be level 4. Which for most golfers is probably death. The point I'm trying to make is – once you've accepted that you're never going to be better at golf than you were at a previous point in life, that's when you can really big dick people around the golf course.
You don't have to be a professional golfer to get to that point either. I like to think I reached it a while ago. I played on my high school golf team. My parents lived on a course. I used to play 18 holes every day, spend hours at the range, then go chip around on hole 16 in our backyard when the sun went down. But since then... once I realized I will never be the golfer I was back when I played every day... that's when I really started enjoying the game. I might only play a few times a year, but as long as I can still rip one or two of these per round...
I don't care if I shoot 100. Give me a couple big drives (and maybe one cool birdie), and I'm perfectly content with my performance.
What Freddy Couples did at that Sanford International closest-to-pin contest is the hardest a man can drop dick on his peers at a country club. It's a closest to the pin contest. There's probably a prize involved. There are contestants who are really trying to win. I guarantee there's people who hit bad shots and were genuinely beating themselves about it. Then 66-year old Masters Champion Freddy Couples steps up and just kinda whacks at a ball with a hybrid. He doesn't care if he wins. He doesn't care how close his ball ends up to the hole. He barely cares if he hits the green. He's fully moved onto his next conversation before his ball even comes to rest. And while he's in the middle of a handshake, it drops in the cup. Hole-in-one. Freddy Couples wins. Better luck next time everyone else.
That's as cool as it gets on a golf course. I aspire to be as care free about everything in my life as Freddy Couples is about his golf game. Not caring is always cooler than caring. Well.. that's not entirely true. You can't "not care" about things that actually matter. But for trivial things like golf... well done Freddy Couples. You're an example to us all.
