Rutgers (-29.5) Gets Absolutely BLASTED 37-21 by UMass, Who Didn't Win a Game Last Season and Had Never Beaten a Power Conference Opponent
The final score doesn't even do justice to the absolute shellacking UMass laid on Rutgers in Piscataway, New Jersey to begin the 2026 football season. Greg Schiano is in shambles.
UMass, which went 0-12 last season and was 0-33 vs power conference opponents with an average margin of 30 points per game since moving to the FBS in 2012, went into Thursday's matchup as a 29.5-point underdog and was up three possessions in the second quarter. This thing was never close.
Even as I was typing this up, Rutgers quarterback Dylan Lonergan threw a third terrible interception and the Minutemen put the ball in the end zone one more time. What an epic embarrassment.
Good for UMass. Tough break for Schiano, whom I was assured by the entirety of the national college football media several years ago was God's gift to coaching and would have turned Tennessee into a national title contender in no time. I think everything worked out the way it was supposed to.
The silver lining for Rutgers is this ass whooping only cost them $1.5 million.
