While Being Introduced As The New Seattle Seahawks Owner, Vinod Khosla Wasted No Time Revealing He's Been a Massive Steelers Fan For Decades And Still Watches Every Game
Kimberly White. Getty Images.Big day for Seahawks fans as their new owner, venture capitalist billionaire Vinod Khosla, had his introductory press conference with the media. Now, for the most part, there isn't much that can really go wrong during these. Just smile, be happy and share your enthusiasm for becoming an owner in the league. I'm not saying you gotta be Kwanza Jones, but just show some passion for the team.
What I usually tell incoming NFL owners who ask for advice about their debut press conference is to not admit you've been a diehard fan of another team for the last half century. Khosla mostly adhered to that advice except for the one moment when he admitted for no reason at all that he's a big Steelers fan, and has been one for 50 years.
Jack Bauer couldn't have gotten that information out of me if he had a gun pointed at my knee and was threatening my family's safety. Just no need at all to put that out there. Now is it earth shattering and detrimental that the Seahawks owner is a big Steelers fan? No, not really. It'd be worse if the Seahawks hadn't won a Super Bowl since losing to Pittsburgh in 2006, but thankfully for them, they have. Ideally the billionaire tycoon who buys your team is already a fan coming in and gets an extra enjoyment from the team doing well, but plenty of people in sports don't work for the team the grew up cheering for. Hey at least the guy likes football? On a rainy day he might ship off JSN to the Steelers for a couple 6th round picks, but besides that I'm sure it won't come into play.
The one actual issue you run into here is that he runs the team like a true business. In theory a guy who doesn't have his heart and soul attached to a team is more likely to fuck around with them. This answer wasn't exactly comforting.
The words in the video are fine by themselves, but when they follow the revelation that your new owner is a big fan of another team in the league, they're not exactly the most refreshing things to hear.
So yeah, not exactly the day Seahawks fans envisioned, but hey at least the new owner is still having a better week than fellow NFC West rival Jed York.
