It Keeps Getting Dumber - Guys On NFL Rosters Reportedly Want To Be Released So They Can Go Back To College After A Court Ruling Granted Them A 5th Year
[Source] - The list of plaintiffs includes 16 football players, several who signed with NFL teams and participated in training camps earlier this month. Three of the players -- Wright, Williams and former Oregon State running back Anthony Hankerson -- are currently listed on NFL rosters for the Browns, Cardinals and Seahawks, respectively.
Those players have expressed an interest in being released from their NFL contracts, according to attorney Ryan Downton, and if their NFL teams release them by Sept. 1 they will be allowed to join a college roster under the restraining order.
What are we doing here? I said it my AJ Storr blog the other day, I'm so fucking sick of court rulings in college sports. Now we're talking about guys who are currently listed on NFL rosters wanting to be released so they can go back to college? Look, get your money, I get that. But college football games start in 9 days! This isn't like February and you can kind of understand why guys would decide NFL Draft or stay in college. This is after a preseason NFL game. We're looking at basically the same week the college football season starts. No one like that should be going back to college.
I know we fall into nostalgia pretty easy, but remember how easy college sports was back in the day? Guys got paid under the table, you had geographical rivals and you knew who was on your roster for months before the season started. Hell, it wasn't even that long ago we knew simple things like who is on the roster. It wasn't even that long ago that the ACC had teams only around the Atlantic coast and not in California. I don't know if there's anything dumber than Cal and Stanford being in the ACC.
Again, I know how much money is being thrown around college sports. It's insane, but hey, if you're rich why not try to load up on guys to win a title. But, isn't the whole goal to play in the NFL? If you're on the roster and fighting for a spot, why not, you know, do that? I just can't wrap my head around how any of this keeps happening. Again, I understand this class might feel screwed because of COVID and guys getting a free COVID year and all this other stuff that ties in there. But it's time to stop this bullshit. If you're on an NFL roster, even if it's preseason or training camp, ya ain't going back to college. It's that simple. Can we please start using our brains in college sports?
