Lane Kiffin Summarized The "Disrespect" Jayden Is Feeling Towards LSU - His Number 5 Is In Play, But Joe Burrow's Number 9 Is Not
And there you have it. That's the disrespect that's being talked about from Jayden Daniels (and/or his team) directed at LSU. It boils down to LSU allowing others to wear number 5, but not allowing others to wear number 9.
But look. Jayden should embrace it. He didn't win a Natty, Burrow did. There's levels to it. Jayden can be beloved at LSU and have someone else wear 5. It's very ok.
This whole number thing, as you can hear in Kiffin's voice, is dumb as hell. There is no reason to gatekeep the number. Jayden seems like the kind of guy who would be on the sidelines, happily cheering on the new number 5. It's stunning to me that he cares. There's got to be more to it- ie LSU profiting off his NIL but then not giving him the respect he thinks he deserves.
This whole thing is pretty silly. It's a fucking jersey number. But when you get deep into the weeds of what numbers mean to football programs, you can sorta get Jayden's side. But it's still silly to me. He did 3 years at ASU before going to LSU, it's not like LSU runs through his blood. It's definitely a weird money thing with NIL and lawyers and what have you.
Jayden has taken to his IG to address the situation:

Yeah so in conclusion it boils down to:
1) 5 is in play, 9 isn't.
2) LSU makes money off his NIL with number 5, but then "disrespect him" by letting someone else wear it.
3) College football is crazy. It's just a number.
Hopefully this is a non-story soon and we can get back to what matters. Winning the Super Bowl. HTTC.
