Report: An NFL Advance Scout Says Newlywed Travis Kelce 'is Done. That's Over.'
Andy Reid is a gentleman who spent more than his share of time shopping with his mom in the Husky section of the Sears Boys' Department:
So it's understandable that he would defend his star tight end over allegations he's let himself go. In fact, one video of Travis Kelce looking rather portly went viral even though it was AI-generated. (We might as well brace ourselves for more of that.)
And yet Reid might legitimately have reason to be concerned about Kelce this upcoming season. If you listen to some pundits, with his entire offense, in fact. At least according to the latest report from NFL insider Jason LaCanfora. [Emphasis mine]:
[Patrick] Mahomes is on target to go down as a top five quarterback in the history of this league and he attacked his recovery and 75% of him is still elite. But there is going to be a process of discovery for him and Reid about how to navigate through this, especially in the first half of the season. Top wide receiver Rashee Rice just returned to training camp amid even more legal issues for him and after a knee procedure, too. Tight end Travis Kelce, or Mr. Taylor Swift now that the couple are official, is past his prime and potentially cooked.
Is this too tall a task, even for the mighty Mahomes, and must they add more talent on offense before the midseason trade deadline?
"I don’t think they’re a great offense, Jason, I really don’t," top NFL analyst Brian Baldinger told me this offseason, and he’s far from the only one opining as such. "They don’t look like it to me. They haven’t done enough."
Plenty of NFL execs thought Reid might lean deep into a diverse set of pass catchers at the top of the draft, but they went heavy defense instead. Counting on Rice is a recipe for disappointment, with him barely playing the last two years. …
ice averaged a scant 3.5 adjusted yards/route run last season, nearly two yards down from 2024. They lack a deep presence and some believe Kelce is a short-distance decoy at this point, no longer able to impact games in a meaningful manner.
"Kelce is done," one NFL advance scout told me. "That’s over. What you saw last year – that’s what he is."
Kelce in 2025 hit career lows in drop percentage (7.8%, nearly twice his prior career average) and adjusted yards per route, and his depth of target has been in decline. The real rub is that, despite that dropoff, Kelce ran the fourth-most routes of his career (gulp, might really hit the wall in 2026) and came away with the fewest receptions he’s had since 2015 (pre-Mahomes). Lack of dynamic personnel has sapped Kansas City’s red zone offense, once a superpower, and Kelce has just 13 total touchdowns over the last three years after posting 12 in 2022.
I'll add that Kelce was just 33rd among all tight ends in passer rating when targeted at 98.0. He was just 26th in reception % at 73.8%. And 36th with a contested catch rate of 37.5%. By way of comparisons, George Kittle's was 84.6%.
Still, to be fair, he was still Top 10 in the league in your volume stats like receptions and receiving yards. Despite Mahomes missing the last three weeks.
But I don't see how anyone could have watched Kelce in 2025 and thought he wasn't standing his professional grave. And without the one thing he's always had throughout his career, which is elite receiving talent around him to draw attention and double teams and create space, those contested catches are only going to get more contested.
For my money, Baldinger is one of the best analysts in the business. If he says the Chiefs offense hasn't improved, it's wise to listen to him. He didn't sacrifice 10% of his fingers to succeed in this league just to not know what he's talking about:
That rubbery pinkie is like the bump on a head some guys head that gives them knowledge. Listen to it.
And that anonymous advance scout does this for a living. He's not softening his evaluation of Kelce under a bunch of qualifying language like "might" or "could be." He's saying Kelce is cooked. And as the report says, these two are not alone.
But I don't need expert testimony to believe what my eyes have been telling me. Which is that Kelce was a shadow of his former self last season. And all he's done since is marry the most famous and celebrated female performer in the English speaking world. And probably the richest. In a gaudy, elaborate, star-studded ceremony held in The World's Most Famous Arena [tm]. In what plane of existence in an infinite multiverse would those conditions prepare him to be a better tackle football player than he was before the wedding?
It's only natural that Kelce's going to, if not outright start mailing it in, cut back on his workload. Taylor Swift is many things. Including successful, popular, talented, respected and admired. But you cannot convince me she's not high maintenance. She has to be. It's human nature. The "tails" side of the coin that has all those other traits on the "heads" side. Nor can you argue that living with her is somehow conducive to living a life of Spartan self-denial that it takes to truly succeed this late in your career.

Now, a cynic might point out that I spent the better part of 15 years being a shameless sycophant for Tom Brady and Gisele. Fine. You'd not be wrong. But you'd be leaving out the part where I credited Gisele for keeping her husband on top of his game, precisely by being so high maintenance. All those stories about how none of his teammates could beat him to the stadium gym and the videos of him sitting in his study at the Brookline mansion pouring over game film are testament to that. His alternative to hitting the gym before Rodney Harrison could get there, was to sleep in with his supermodel wife prattling on about how she gave up her career to support his dreams. If he wasn't meticulously studying opposing defenses, he was forced to listen to the Mrs. yammering about how she had the chef make gluten free vegan lasagne. (It's no coincidence that as soon as the marriage dissolved, he started pushing Pizza Hut.) My point being that Brady was an outlier. Kelce is just a guy with declining skills married to the biggest pop superstar in America. That's not going to help him.
My favorite history podcaster Dan Carlin is fond of citing the old axiom about how history is the sound of silk slippers going downstairs, and wooden shoes going up. Meaning that people who live soft, comfortable lives are conquered by those who have less. Kelce's silk cleats were already going down the stairs last season. In 2026, he's hitting the ground floor. And inevitably, ending up in the basement.
