Akron Will Let a Season Ticket Holder Script the Opening Drive of the Season and You Could Be the Lucky Winner for Just $75
This is absolutely insane. I had to read it three times to make sure I was understanding it correctly. But if we are to take Akron at its word, the Zips are going to let a fan call the real plays in their real home opener on September 12 against Robert Morris.
So what's the catch here? Obviously, this is a ploy to sell season tickets — and it's working — but there's no way it can just be any plays some random guy wants. What happens when the first two plays of the year are double reverses that put Akron in 3rd and 27 and then Doug from Mansfield dials up a halfback pass that gets picked off and returned for a touchdown? Now the Zips are down 7-0 to an FCS team and with all due respect to Akron, I don't know that it's a team that wants to be in a dogfight with anybody.
What insane bulletin board material for Robert Morris, too. If this was Georgia doing this, it would still be disrespectful, but they'd beat the piss out of Robert Morris no matter what happened. There's a world where this goes very sideways for Akron.
Conversely, what happens if the Zips march down the field on the opening drive for a touchdown and don't score the rest of the game? Is some random fan the new permanent offensive coordinator? I've never wanted something as badly as I want great content to come from this promotion.
Credit to the marketing team, though, because they're moving tickets. For just $75, you can become a 2026 Akron football season ticket holder and be entered for a chance to win this insane prize.
Akron-RMU just became must-watch for one drive.
