The First Trailer For ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Is Finally Here

Heroes from three different worlds must unite when they're thrust together to confront a catastrophic danger that could destroy everything they know.

On the technical side of things, this does everything you should want. Gives you a glimpse of the big new bad guy in Dr. Doom, big voiceovers on how it’s impossible and just a few clips of fights without giving anything away. Basically a redone version of the Infinity War and Endgame trailers which were excellent and precursors of great movies. On paper, this should be what we want.

Spiritually, however this doesn’t feel close to the culteral moments those had. I think that just comes down to two things. The first is that marvel obviously struggled to maintain quality after Endgame. I feel very safe saying that none of the 15 movies they’ve released since then have hit the peaks the pre-infinity war movies did. The second is that the cultural zeitgeist seems to have mostly moved past superhero movies. Maybe the market was too flooded but people seem to want new things now. So is it cool to see some old Fox characters like Patrick Stewart's Professor X and Cyclops appear with the mainline MCU characters? Sure, but it would have hit a lot harder at the apex of the universe, not now. 

I feel the same fatigue many of you have brought on by quantity over quality. What gets my hopes up for this is simple. This is the Russo brothers bag. There is truly nobody that does team up movies like them. On top of that, they snaked their way into getting RDJ back (and his voice at least sounds cool in the trailer), AND Michael Waldron, who penned the best marvel TV show in ‘Loki’ was on the script. 

So to reiterate something a wise man once said, we don’t have “superhero fatigue”. We have fatigue for BAD superhero movies. And I’ll hold out hope that this is a good one.

As of right now, it’s slated to release against Dune III on December 18th.
