Philly Fans Set The Tone Early At The Home Run Derby, Boo The Absolute Heck Out Of Everybody Not Wearing A Phillies Uniform
Oh, you thought this was supposed to be a silly little event for everyone to have fun? A nice little way for guys to kick back and let loose before the 2nd half of the season gets going? A way to sell some ads, market some superstars, and grow the game?
If you thought it was any of those things, then you shouldn't have held the Home Run Derby in Philadelphia. Because when you put an event like this in Philly, it immediately becomes a war. This isn't a Home Run Derby tonight. It's Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber going up against the entire league.
So naturally, Philly fans were going to make sure they gave every other player in the ballpark tonight a proper welcome.
Even the little kids in the outfield are getting it. You're playing on the field where champions play. If you can't make a play, then it's bed time for you.
Now here's the thing--Philly fans are not a bunch of dipshit neanderthals. We aren't just a bunch of dumb apes who are going to boo you just for the sake of booing you. If you start to earn the respect of Philly fans, you are going to get exactly what you deserve. So if you're a guy like Jac Caglianone and you blast one into the upper deck? Well the Philly fans are going to take their foot off the boo pedal and let you know you're good to go.
That's the important thing to understand about Philly fans. We are a huge proponent of guilty until proven innocent, but we're willing to change our stance. We're not as stubborn as people think. The moment you prove yourself to be worthy of not being hated relentlessly, you're in the clear. If anything, that seems rather reasonable and progressive for a fanbase.
Sidenote: No boo's on this one.
