The 'Mexican Batman' Has Been Running Around the City, Catching Motorbike Thieves and Leaving Them Taped to Poles for the Police
It's as much a part of Batman lore as caves, butlers, and kinky relationships with insanely hot feline supervillains. From the very first time he appeared in Detective Comics in 1939, through every iteration of the character, The Caped Crusader has caught evildoers in the act, apprehended them, tied them up, and left them for the Gotham Police Department to take into custody. They'll read you your Miranda Rights, dickweed. The Dark Knight is the guy doing things the way Jim Gordon, Chief O'Hara and their guys can't.
And so it happens that in Mexico, life is imitating art:
NY Post - A Mexican vigilante dubbed “Batman” is wanted by police for allegedly chasing down suspected motorbike thieves around town and taping them to lampposts, according to a report.
At least five men were discovered helplessly duct-taped to street poles over 10 days, beginning on June 13 in the area of Lagos de Moreno, Jalisco, the Sun reported.
Many of the alleged thieves also had mustaches, cat whiskers and the Spanish word for “thief” scrawled on their faces, according to several images posted by Mexican journalist Luis Cárdenas on X.
The vigilante — whom Cardenas referred to as the “Batman of Lagos de Merono” — left the allegedly stolen bikes near the men to show off their crimes, the outlet reported. ...
The men were cut free from the posts and treated for their injuries. It’s unclear if they are being investigated for the alleged thefts.
There have been no arrests yet, but cops have identified two vehicles that may be connected to the incidents.
So there's no word as to whether the police are going to charge the motorcycle thieves the Batman of Lagos de Merono risked his neck to bring to justice. But we do know for sure they're on the hunt for him. That they're already on the lookout for two vehicles tied to this mysterious nighttime vigilante. I don't mean to help the police on this, but I'm sure one will be an armored black custom job with more hidden capabilities than 007's Aston Martin. And the other is a limo driven by a stuffy but fiercely loyal British butler with a secret past he rarely talks about.
But that's the entire point of The Bat. This is why Lagos de Merono needs him. Because the police can't be trusted. These thieves cases will likely be handed over to Detective Arnold Flass, who everyone in the city knows is on the payroll of the Mexican equivalent of Carmine Falcone. Hell, the thieves could be working for El Falcone too. All just cogs in his machine, stealing motorbikes in order to take over the waterfront so he can increase his smuggling operations. And since he's probably bought up all the judges too, it falls to one man to bring justice to the good people of the city.
This is why they need him. Because he's the hero Lagos de Merono deserves, but not the one it needs right now. So they'll hunt him. Because he can take it. Because he's not their hero. He's a silent guardian, a watchful protector. A dark knight.
So keep up the good, anonymous hero work. Make these criminals fear you, and you can be a symbol of hope for an entire city living in fear of these bike thieves.
