The Miami Heat Have Won The Giannis Sweepstakes And He's Officially Taking His Talents To South Beach

One thing that was rather annoying these last few days was getting faked out by some bullshit Shams tweet announcing some sort of NBA news that really, nobody cared about. Meaningless extensions, Perk college jobs etc. The more Shams tweeted, the more infuriating it got considering the entire world was on #GiannisWatch. It was a brutal waiting game for everyone, and even more so for those who root for the two teams that made it to the final showdown between the Heat and Celtics. 

Even as we got into Monday night, it was more of the same. More Shams tweets, more speculation, but nothing official. Around and around we went. 

And then, as we approached midnight, Shams finally dropped the nuke

The Heat are sending to Milwaukee unprotected first-rounders in 2031 and 2033 along with No. 13, a pick swap in 2030 and a 2033 second-rounder, according to sources. 

The trade does not include any additional teams -- it is a one-to-one move, sources said -- but both the Heat and Bucks will execute the deal on July 6, which leaves the framework open to see if there are opportunities to expand.

Heat president Pat Riley now makes his long-anticipated new landmark acquisition, with Antetokounmpo joining elite Miami pickups such as LeBron James, Shaquille O’Neal, Chris Bosh, Alonzo Mourning and Jimmy Butler over the past 30-plus years. Riley will pair the two-time NBA MVP and 2021 Finals MVP with Bam Adebayo to lead contention in the Eastern Conference. After informing teams that they were open for business at the NBA draft combine in May, Bucks general manager Jon Horst landed a haul with the Heat’s offer that brings high-level starting/rotation players and young talent, as well as significant draft capital.

The Celtics aggressively pursued Giannis, offering Milwaukee a package featuring 2024 Finals MVP Jaylen Brown and two first-round picks, sources tell ESPN. The Bucks seriously negotiated with two finalists in recent weeks: Miami and Boston, which were both on Antetokounmpo’s list of preferred destinations.

You see, this is why you can't sleep during the NBA offseason! Shit goes down at all hours of the night in this league, that's just part of the fun.

So this is it. The national nightmare that was the Giannis Trade is finally over. After years and years of speculation and Shams trying to speak this trade into existence, it finally happened. Remember this tweet from Giannis back in February?

Whoops! Turns out, he very much was leaving. I guess Shams was right this whole time? Crazy how that ended up huh? All that pushback from the Bucks and their fans only for Shams to finally be right in the end? All that talk about loyalty and such from Giannis and how legends never run they attract or whatever as he runs to take his talents to South Beach. Woof.

For the Heat, this was obviously a move they had to make. They've been angling for this move for years, and Pat Riley finally came through after striking out on so many previous stars. They certainly paid the price for it when you look at that final package, not so much in terms of the players, but more so the picks. Two unprotected 1sts, #13, a future swap and a 2nd is a pretty good package for a rebuilding team, and frankly it's the type of move that Riley had to make. My guess is all the negotiations were about extracting some of those picks/protections, and given that Brad Stevens wasn't going higher than two 1sts, I'm not surprised the Bucks went with the Heat's offer.

Given this all just happened and I'm blogging this in real time, let me get my thoughts together and we'll talk about what this now means for Brad Stevens and my beloved Celtics. Pretty sticky situation they now find themselves in now that Brad didn't close the deal, and we'll see what happens from here.

But for now, Heat fans can celebrate. After years of praying and hoping that somehow Pat Riley would land a whale, he came through. Now, will they be good enough to get back into contention? We're about to find out.
