My New Favorite Relationship in All the World: Drake Maye and AJ Brown

With Patriots mandatory mini-camp now concluded, it's been made demonstrably clear that Drake Maye is enjoying his second consecutive offseason as the starting quarterback. That he's no longer climbing the steep learning curve of Josh McDaniels Perkins-Erhardt system like last year at this time. He's become its master. And as this clip demonstrates, the NFL's most accurate passer in 2025 is throwing sniper rounds to his entire wide receiver depth chart.

But while Maye's not discriminating between Kyle Williams, Kayshon Boutte, Romeo Doubs, Efton Chism and Pop Douglas, three days of workouts left no doubt who this QB1's WR1 is. He and AJ Brown have wasted zero practice reps doing an elaborate mating dance, showing their colorful tailfeathers or giving off pheromones. Instead, they went right straight in, consummated this thing and started making football babies.

I mean, feast your eyes on the way these two are making sweet, sweet music together already:

The ball is in the air before Brown makes his break. He's running a post but has the defender turned around. So Maye puts it near the pylon where only Brown can get it. Brown tracks the ball and flips his hips to get to it before the coverage can adjust. Touchdown.

Bear in mind, that's not some roster bubble guy they burned there. That's Craig Woodson, who led their defense in snaps last year with over 1,200, with 769 of them in coverage. He's experienced. He knows how to defend receivers in man. Even elite ones. And mere weeks into their collaboration, Maye and Brown are making him look like a small school UFDA they're taking a flyer on to see if he makes the practice squad.

But with these two, it goes way beyond a few precisely thrown balls connecting at the end of precisely run routes and being caught for touchdowns. Though there are those. Lots of those. What we all need to do is find someone who talks about us the way Maye and Brown already do about one another:

Emphasis, mine:

Source -  Before Thursday’s practice started, the Pro Bowl receiver gave Maye a pep talk.

“I was just bragging on him,” Brown said. “I said, ‘Hey, man, you can make any throw.’ I just want him to be confident. I was kind of pushing him today. I told him, ‘I want you to be perfect today.’ He was like, ‘Let’s be perfect.’ I said, ‘Don’t worry about anybody else. Just focus on yourself. You be perfect, you’re gonna raise us up, and everybody else will follow.’ So just trying to poke at him a little bit, see how far you go, you know, but he’s a great player, and I’m excited for this season.” …

“What I learned about him - the talent speaks for itself. You know, he can make any throw,” Brown said. “But I think what’s more impressive to me is that he knows what he’s doing. And to be that young and to understand the defense and to understand every little check, the hots, the blitz and all those things, so young and so fast, it’s very impressive. And so I really admire that he knows what he’s talking about.

“He demands everybody else to know as well, and he’s a true leader. He’s a true leader of men. And it’s crazy to see at a young age, you know, he’s a true leader of men.”

Or can it? We're not done here yet:

Source - "It feels like A.J.'s been here since the start. It all feels normal, like he didn't just get here," receiver DeMario "Pop" Douglas said. …

Defenders took note of Maye looking in Brown's direction quickly, with veteran safety Kevin Byard saying, "You can tell, they're already developing that relationship." …

According to teammates and coaches, here's how Brown stood out to them over the past 10 days:

Accountability

Receivers coach Todd Downing: "His second practice, he had a drop on a 'go' ball. And after practice, he wanted to do push-ups for the drop in front of the group. Everybody chose to do it together. So, creating and augmenting that culture of mutual accountability has been awesome."

Head coach Mike Vrabel: "I think he has showed up with a great attitude, and I have enjoyed watching his interactions with the other players on the team. I think that is probably the thing that I'm most excited about right now."

Presence

Maye: "He knows what it's like to win, and he's someone in that room that we were looking for. I think that's the best thing. Stefon Diggs provided it for us last year. Now there have been guys that are growing in their roles, but just coming in with that stature, his ability, his size, and just the respect that you walk in there with, that kind of Stef had, A.J.'s got it, too."

I guess that last meme was wrong:

But enough about arousal.

This is something much more pure, wholesome and fulfilling. It's about Maye and Brown poised to become one of the best QB/Target combos in the history of this franchise. To go way back, Jim Plunkett and his Stanford teammate Randy Vataha. Steve Grogan and Stanley Morgan. Drew Bledsoe and Ben Coates or Terry Glenn. Tom Brady and [insert names of Patriots Hall of Famer].

The rest of the NFL sat by in pure sadistic glee while a steady stream of lesser quarterbacks tried to take Brady's place and an army of failures, draft busts, and has beens marched through the WR room. All that changed last year, from mini camps to the Super Bowl. And now it's gotten better. Two Pro Bowlers getting to know each other, and making that connection that is utterly necessary and can't be faked. And we're still a month and a half before the start of Training Camp. My summer has already been made.

I'll end this with what I said in the headline. Drake Maye and AJ Brown are my favorite relationship in the world right now. After 32 years of marriage, my own Irish Rose will just have to understand that I'm in love with this fresh, new, exciting love story.
