I'm Glad The Cubs Fans Of Barstool Chicago Turned Me Into A White Sox Fan
Geoff Stellfox. Getty Images. It's almost been three years since I moved to the city of Chicago. And since moving here, I've enjoyed my time and everything the city has to offer. One of those things being the Chicago White Sox. You see when I moved here, I told myself I would pick one Chicago team to incorporate into my fandom. I wanted to be apart of one of the best sports towns in America.
The only thing is, I wasn't going to give up my south Florida roots and ditch teams that I actually care about, like the Dolphins, Heat and Panthers. But there was one sport I never gave a fuck about…. baseball. The Marlins have been God awful pretty much my whole life and even if they were good, it wouldn't change anything.
I moved to Chicago at the best time.. Summer Time Chi was in full affect and at the time we were still working out of that Chicago office which is the size of the kitchen we have in the current office. The only thing that it had over this new place was how close it was to Wrigley.
Naturally, I ended up going to a couple Cubs games and like anyone who just moved to the city of Chicago, you fall in love with Wrigleyville. Especially when you're 23 years old, single, and like to party. After my first Cubs game, I thought I had my mind made up. So I went up to Eddie and he said, you're not a Cubs guy.
At first I didn't know what he meant, but then I went to the Sox opening day and I immediately understood what Eddie meant. I'm not from the Southside but I feel the Southside. I relate to them. Nothing against the northside people. They're fun. But they're not the Southside. When I pulled up to that opener and saw people tailgating for hours on end to watch a shitty team play a sport, I felt that in my bones.
Since I made the decision to pick up the black and white cap over the gen pop red and blue one, all I've been bombarded with is "why would you pick the White Sox over the Cubs?" "You picked the wrong team" "The White Sox fucking suck" "You coulda been a Cubs fan!"
Fast forward almost three years later and the White Sox have a better record than the Cubs, one game out of first place in the division and THE most fun team to watch in all of baseball. Even when this team loses you are at least entertained. This team doesn't have the word quit in their vocabulary. Every game, every night, is a fucking fight and I love it.
I love that now when I go to the bars with my White Sox cap on I get bombarded with "Go Sox "How bout that fucking game" "Bro how fun is this team to watch?" "I love that you picked the Sox over the cubs, anyone could be a cubs fan." You're gosh darn right anyone could be a Cubs fan.
Which is why I want to thank every single cubs fan in this office for steering me away from that team and helping me find my true home. A home on the Southside where we don't need 500 bars for people to show up to a game, but because we actually love our team.
