Rickie Fowler Just Hit One of The More Sneaky Impressive Shots You'll See on a Golf Course at RBC Heritage

Not AI. Thanks for clearing that up @PGATOUR. And thank goodness it's not, because that would have been the most pointless use of AI I've seen to date. 

You see a lot of crazy things on the course during a PGA Tour event. Shots I would never dream of hitting. Greens with slopes so fast that the ball reacts in ways I didn't know were possible. Like when players just throw a wedge shot into the back of the green and let it trickle down to within a few feet of the hole. I've played a ton of golf in my life, and I've never once encountered a green even capable of that. I wouldn't even know what to do with it. 

And I've seen a whole lot players punch of in different ways. I've seen right handed players turn lefty, but they always flip their club upside down so they're still hitting with the flat part of the club. I don't think I've ever seen a golfer do what Rickie Fowler just did. Even with relatively flat blade irons, I never thought you could get consistent enough with the back of the club head to be comfortable enough to put a full swing on the ball from the wrong side, and push the ball 100+ yards down the fairway.

Clearly the announcers didn't think so either. They were pondering whether or not the "native area" was firm enough for the ball to even skip out of. If anything, the ground was too hard. Rickie could have used a little softer surface to keep that thing in the fairway. 

At this point in professional golf (other than Tiger Woods for crazy headline/internet discourse reasons), I don't think there's a player I'd rather see get back to form and win a surprise major than Rickie Fowler. He was supposed to win multiple. He should have won at least one. He was the #1 ranked amateur golfer. He burst onto the scene with his brightly colored outfits, and was instantly a crowd favorite. Small children and weird adults alike where showing up to events dressed in versions of his signature Sunday orange Puma fit. 

But he could never quite get it done. He's been damn close too. In 2014 alone, he finished T5 at The Masters, T3 at the PGA Championship, T2 at the U.S. Open, and T2 at The Open. Then in 2018, he went 14-under at Augusta National to finish alone in 2nd, and lose The Masters to Patrick Reed by a single stroke. 

If Rickie Fowler could somehow get it back together for a major, it would make for one of the better feel good comeback stories golf has to offer right now. And if he pulls off some cool left-handed bullshit like he just did at the RBC Heritage on his way to doing so, then all the better.
