A Patriots Fan Breaks His Silence on Mike Vrabel and Dianna Russini
Despite what you might thing, the life of a Barstool blogger is not all glamor. Sure, you're the envy of the world. You get invited to play the most exclusive country clubs, find yourself in First Class clinking glasses of bubbly with supermodels. People name their children and pets after you. Men want to be you. Women want to be with you. You bestride the mighty world like a colossus, the envy of all you survey. But there are times when it's not so easy.
Like now.
I've remained silent on this report - and I refuse to call it anything else right now - about Mike Vrabel and Dianna Russini being seen together at a luxury hotel in Sedona. For several reasons, which I'll get into.
But for now it was suggested to me by one of my editors, the nice men who give me carte blanche to cover pretty much any topic I wish, if I was going to weigh in on this. I had been holding out for more information so I could say something ration and informed.
But the time for waiting is over. I can't remain silent any longer. Sometimes you just have to climb the ladder, go over the top of the trench, across No Man's Land into the hail of bullets, because it's your duty. That time is now. To wait any longer would be to dishonor the uniform. I know what I signed up for when I took this job. So here goes.
I'm not going to pretend to be neutral on this. I've been admiring Vrabel since he established himself as an every down 3-4 outside linebacker on the 2001 Patriots that ushered in the Century of Champions. He's the exact man walking this Earth I wanted coaching my team in 2025. His success in his very first season restored this downtrodden franchise to something close to its former glory. And he's positioned it to start hoisting fresh banners above Gillette Stadium once more.
Dianna Russini is one of my favorite NFL reporters. Her reports are generally reliable, and I've cited them on occasions too numerous to count.
I say this by way of preamble to point out one thing. They deserve the benefit of the doubt. They've earned that respect over many years of being in the public eye, displaying the kind of professionalism that no mere photograph can undo.
If they say there's nothing scandalous going on here, and they do:
... photos don’t represent the group of six people who were hanging out during the day. Like most journalists in the NFL, reporters interact with sources away from stadiums and other venues.”
Athletic executive editor Steven Ginsberg: “These photos are misleading and lack essential context. These were public interactions in front of many people. Dianna is a premier journalist covering the NFL and we’re proud to have her at the Athletic.”

... than I say there's nothing scandalous going on here.
Completely innocent interaction. Innocent. Don't represent. Six people. Misleading. Lack essential context. Public. Proud.
There are times in this world where you have to make a stand. Where you decide whom you put trust in. Two people who've shown nothing but integrity throughout their very public lives, or the kind of person who hides behind a cactus with a telephoto lens secretly invading their privacy.
In January of 2015, the world made a rush to judgment on another Patriots Hall of Famer with multiple Super Bowl rings. I chose to believe Tom Brady was not a liar and a cheat. From Day 1 of that fake non-troversy, I staked out a position I never had to move off of. And stood laughing a hearty Viking bellylaugh as more and more people who assumed him to be guilty on a false premise realize they were lied to and came to my side. The place were I stood from the beginning.
Now in April of 2026, I'm being presented with the identical situation about this Patriots legend, and I'm taking the same stand. Consequences be damned. Let the record show that when the world turned its back on two innocent people, I stood by them. Defending a different sort of wall from 11 years ago. But at my post nevertheless.

I trust that in the days to come, Vrabel and Russini will state their cases. Their six traveling companions will corroborate what they say. We'll realize these photos were deceptively taken and edited. And that there was nothing more innocent than the hug, hand-holding, and hot tub-sitting depicted. Just two professionals in the same industry, enjoying each other's company among friends who are just out of frame.
Like Pascal's Wager on the question of whether there is a God, I'd rather believe in Vrabel and Russini than nothing. Let history remember which side I was on when all about me fell for gossip and rumors.
Though admittedly some of the content has been objectively hilarious.

All this noise, funny though it is, just proves two things:
1. This is also the nature of the business Mike Vrabel and Dianna Russini chose.
2. When the rest of the world is trying to ruin a great season with a made up scandal, it means the Patriots are BACK.
Get your apologies ready. You're going to be needing them. And soon.
