It's Honestly Impressive That Max Comtois Managed To Get Literally Everybody On The Ice, Including His Own Teammates, To Hate Him This Much In The KHL
SOPA Images. Getty Images.Max Comtois had a pretty quick NHL career. He played a few seasons in Anaheim, and wrapped up his career by playing 1 game with the Carolina Hurricanes in 2023-24. For a guy who was the captain of Team Canada at the 2019 World Juniors, it's pretty shocking that he's already playing his 2nd season over in Russia.
But after watching this clip, there's a good chance that skill level isn't the reason why Max Comtois couldn't stick around in an NHL locker room. Maybe there's a chance that everybody just hate playing with the guy.
The ref is tired of his shit. The other team is tired of his shit. His own head coach and teammates are tired of his shit. And it's not even like it's just a bunch of Russians hating on the Canadian. Jordan Weal is a good ol' boy from Saskatoon. He spent a few years with the Flyers and Habs before heading over to the KHL. He's the fella wearing 91 for Dynamo in this clip, and he can't stand the dude either.
I mean how much does a guy need to suck in order for everybody on his own team to throw him under the bus like that? These guys probably pray he gets lit up every time he jumps over the boards. There are always those guys who you hate to play against, but would love to have on your team. Very rarely do you see the guy who you hate to play against, and also equally hate to play with.
The real issue for Dynamo here is that Comtois is 2nd on the team in goals with 19 on the year. They can hate the guy all they want, but there are 20 other guys on the roster who can't produce the way he does. Does he annoy the shit out of them? Does he probably kill the mood instantly every time he walks into the locker room? Does he probably make it impossible for the team to ever get a good whistle during games because all the refs despise him?
Yes. Yes is most likely the answer to all of those questions. But can Dynamo afford to lose his 19 goals on the year? No chance. Tough spot to be in.
