When Stefon Diggs and Cardi B Break Up, They Do it in Spectacular Fashion
Lauren Leigh Bacho. Getty Images.I've compared the epic romance between Stefon Diggs and Cardi B to some of the most famous relationships down through the ages before. In fact, without looking it up, I'm pretty sure I referenced Mark Antony and Cleopatra at least once. While failing to mentioning that things ended for them when he fell on his sword after losing in battle and she famously let a venomous asp bite her rather than be taken captive by the Romans who defeated her man.
The point being, that sometimes the more passionate the relationship, the more spectacularly they end. In the same way the bigger the rocketship, the greater the fireball when they fail to achieve exit velocity and come crashing back to earth.
So it follows that when these two crazy, star-crossed kids split up, it was never going to be just a simple, amiable parting of the ways. Their love was just to intense for that. Instead what we're getting is more along the lines of an existential crisis for each of these hopeless romantics.
Let's begin with Diggs, who took the unusual route of deleting all the content off his Instagram page:
Essentially burning it to the ground rather than look at the images of the love he once had, but lost. Leaving his 2.5 million followers with nothing to … well, follow. Robbing them of content like this:

But his supporters will just have to understand, the pain is just too great. He's like a tragic figure out of some Edgar Allen Poe story, who can no longer stand to gaze at the portraits of the woman he's lost, so he destroys the home that reminds him of her instead. It's profoundly sad, and yet heartbreakingly beautiful at the same time.
But where Diggs has chosen "passive," Cardi B went full on "aggressive." In front of the whole world. Not naming her ex by name. But also leaving no doubt in the mind of any of her ticket-buying public who she was referring to:
TMZ - [S]he's still big mad at the NFL star, and she proved it at her latest concert, throwing major shade at her ex!
The "Imaginary Playerz" rapper was onstage during her "Little Miss Drama Tour" in San Francisco when she opened up about an ex, and while Cardi never named Diggs, the message clearly seemed to be aimed at the New England Patriots receiver.
"You can't be out here playing with a b* like me. There's n** out here praying for a b* like me," Cardi said.
"I'm too sexy to be lonely and too grown to be played with n. Who you playin' with mothaf?!"
As the crowd cheered, Cardi doubled down … saying Diggs never had a woman like her and none of his past flings are on her level.
"None of them bs f***g with me," Cardi said.
Now, to be completely fair to Ms. B, she preemptively shot down this narrative before this blog was even written, asserting that anything she said was just performative:
And who are any of us to argue with an artist performing her craft? But that razzle and all that dazzle came from somewhere. As did those lyrics. Like all the great songwriters, she's drawing off the real life triumphs and tragedies, loves and losses, from her own experience. That introduction was simply too raw and too powerful not to have included her split from her babydaddy, less than three weeks ago.
It's heartrending. Sorrowful. Bittersweet. And oh, so poignant.
Like everyone who's in love with love, I'm rooting hard for these two to somehow try again and make a go of it. The world was a more beautiful place with this modern day Romeo and Juliet still in it together. But then again, these expressions of angst from them both are all part of life's rich pageant in their own way. As long as she keeps entertaining her audience and he gives me another 1,000-yard season, then they will not have loved in vain.
