The Good Times In Seattle Appear To Be Getting Even Better As The Long-Awaited Return Of The Sonics Looks To Be On The Horizon
Rocky Widner. Getty Images. You would think that after winning the Super Bowl last night that things couldn't possibly get any better for the city of Seattle or that fanbase. In most cases, winning a championship is about as good as life is going to get for a city/fanbase. You get to spend all day today soaking it all in. You're watching every show, reading every story, it's awesome.
But what if I were to tell you that life for Seattle fans could possibly get even better?
How could that be possible, you might be wondering, considering they're coming off a Super Bowl title?
Easy.
Giphy Images. There has been speculation about expansion and the potential return of NBA basketball to Seattle for years now. While Adam Silver and the NBA seem obsessed with creating some sort of European League, for my money it's time to stop worrying about that bullshit and put more focus on something that should have happened decades ago.
Bringing the Sonics back into our lives.
It's pretty obvious at this point that the NBA wants to have a team in Vegas, which means unless you're moving an existing franchise, expansion is the only way to make that happen. And if we're adding one team, that means you have to add two, and there is no more deserving market in the country than Seattle. What those fans had to deal with when the Sonics were ripped away and moved to OKC was bullshit, and ever since it's been long overdue for a return.
I can't imagine the Board of Governors would vote against this, and with years of speculation, this is probably the most real a potential Sonics return has ever been right?
As a reminder for any stoolie who is maybe too young to remember the Sonics, they were awesome

In my humble opinion, the NBA is better when the Sonics exist. And while I have no idea if they'll go back to being the Sonics should this expansion happen, I feel like that has to be part of the gig. Figure out whatever red tape there might be, and don't overthink it. The people want the Sonics, so give them the Sonics.
Same name, same color scheme, same jerseys (if you want to update to 2026 fine, but you know what I mean), same court. Let's just pretend the Sonics leaving for OKC never happened and get us back to the glory days. Who would object to that? I don't need some new fancy name that will probably stink. It's already built in for you. Just hit the "approve" button and officially bring back the Sonics. I'm sure it's more complicated than that, but I'm not sure it has to be. This is the easiest no brainer in the history of no brainers.
I can't lie, imagine being a Seattle fan right now? You're already on cloud nine given what took place last night, and now you wake up today with the very real possibility of the Sonics coming back?
Giphy Images. While I personally don't love the Seahawks part of that joy, I am 1000000000000000000000% behind the return of NBA basketball to the Emerald City. All I ask is that the NBA Governors don't fuck this up. It feels like we've never been this close, so don't be lame and just push it through. We've waited long enough.
