Grit: Portland Head Coach Shantay Legans Tore His Achilles After Being Forced To Practice With The Team, Upset Gonzaga While Coaching On A Scooter
It comes for everyone, man. I'm telling you from experience, it comes for everyone. i'm not talking about beating Gonzaga, I'm talking about the catastrophic sports injury that happens when you're just too old to keep playing. Shantay Legans learned it last week. Tried to help his team out since everyone is sick and needed someone on the scout team. He probably figured he still has some legs under him, he's only 44 years old. Could easily just make a couple moves, do his job as coach/scout team and get out no problem.
Nope. The dreaded torn Achilles.

Shades of Ron Hunter out there
But man, getting the biggest win of your career and every picture you got the boot on or a scooter near by? Brutal. Not as bad as having to go golf in Ireland with a boot on, but you get the point. There's an Achilles epidemic and I won't hear any other argument. Too many people are tearing the Achilles and it's the worst injury. You're just stuck, it doesn't necessarily hurt when it happens, you just go into shock.
What a win. It's not like this is Saint Mary's or one of those teams that always bother Gonzaga, this is Portland. This is a bad Portland team too. They are 11-14 and just lost by 30 to Washington State in the last game. Nothing but respect for Shantay Legans. The man is out here hopping around on one foot, using a scooter, all heart. What a sport, what a win.
