The Detroit Lions Fan Punched By D.K. Metcalf is Suing For $100M in a Defamation Lawsuit That Includes Chad Johnson and Shannon Sharpe
#Lions fan Ryan Kennedy has filed a $100M lawsuit against #Steelers WR DK Metcalf and the media company tied to Chad Johnson and Shannon Sharpe, alleging defamation, negligence, and more. Kennedy says he was falsely branded a racist in national media following a Dec. 21 altercation with Metcalf at Ford Field — accusations he vehemently denies. His attorney says no audio or video evidence supports claims that racial slurs were used, and alleges the narrative spread widely across major media outlets, causing severe personal and professional harm. Kennedy is also suing Metcalf for assault and battery and the Steelers for their alleged liability in the incident. He is seeking damages and court-ordered public retractions to clear his name.
Shoot for the moon, I guess. If you miss, you might end up walking away with a million dollar settlement paid out by the stars. If only we could all be so lucky to be on the receiving end of a diva wide receiver crash out. To be not-even-really punched in the face by D.K. Metcalf.
To have D.K. Metcalf respond by immediately accusing you of N-word usage. To one day hire multiple lawyers and hold a backwards hat press conference behind a folding table in your driveway to inform the world how not racist you are.
And the cherry on top – to have Chad Johnson and his co-host Shannon Sharpe doubled down on the N-word saying accusations on their football podcast. It's been a tough year for Shannon Sharpe in the being-sued-for-doing-terrible-things department. Shannon Sharpe has become the most suable man in the world. He's fresh of settling on a $50M lawsuit over rape allegations. Allegations that got him fired from ESPN. Now an abundantly not racist Lions fan is coming at his company, Shay Shay Media, for their portion of $100M worth of defamation.
I've never been involved in a defamation lawsuit. I'm not exactly sure what the rules are. To ask for $100M seems excessive. It's gotta be tough to do $100M worth of damage to someone's reputation if they never had a reputation in the first place. But who am I to say? Perhaps Mr. Kennedy was on the precipice of a multi-multi-multi-million dollar business deal, but once his partner heard Ochocino say this, the deal went up in flames.

Regardless, as little as I know about defamation lawsuits, I've seen enough to know that this is how it's done. Sue the rich person who you believe wronged you for an impossible amount of money, and hope they cut you a check for even 1% of that amount to leave them alone. That's the American dream these days – falling ass backwards into a life-changing settlement. Personally, I'd prefer breaking my leg via falling through a NYC subway grate to being publicly accused of racism. But beggars can't be choosers. You play the cards you're dealt.
