'There's Haves And Have-Nots' - Mick Cronin Wins By 32, Still Delivers A Rant About Wanting A Salary Cap In College Sports To Make Everything Even
I find Mick Cronin entertaining. Is he whiny? Of course. Some may even call him an asshole. But he's entertaining, he's a guy who loves basketball, suits and getting angry. Now this, this is something I understand but also he's kinda just wrong. It doesn't matter if you're in the NIL era or not, there's never going to be an even playing field. I get what Mick is saying here. He's backing his guy in Pikiell because Rutgers has no money after sacrificing everything for Harper/Bailey last year and at the same time Mick knowing UCLA can't compete with the Michigan's of the world in the Big 10 with money.
But it's always been that way. Pre-NIL was just a war over facilities and under the table money that you had. Also, money doesn't matter to a degree. Look at Kansas State for example. They had unlimited money last year and missed the Tournament. It's not uncommon for people to have all this money, still miss on finding the right fit and being a bubble team. You have to win on the court.
I don't think the money thing is even a problem. I know people like to point at it, but there's always been haves and have-nots in college sports. You think UCLA basketball and Howard basketball are on the same level? Of course not, but they are competing in the same event. Having a salary cap doesn't do anything, it's so simple you just need to enforce it and then everyone needs to stop being a pussy and suing the NCAA because they know they can win there.
1. You get one free transfer. If you want to transfer a second time you sit out for a year UNLESS you're a grad transfer or your coach leaves.
2. Once you declare for the NBA, you're done forever in college sports
Boom, I just fixed roughly 80% of the problems. A salary cap isn't going to do anything. It'll just be a mix of NIL and guys getting paid under the table like always happened in the NCAA.
