In 49 Other States: Indiana High Schools Decided To Reschedule A Bunch Of Massive Basketball Games So The Whole State Can Watch The Peach Bowl
I've been on this Earth for nearly 40 years and never in my life did I think I'd see something like this. Forget the Indiana football turnaround being a miracle. The fact that Indiana high school basketball is rescheduling rivalry games and massive games is something that I never thought would happen.
This is Indiana high school basketball we're talking about here. We're talking about a state that lives and dies with high school basketball, especially since the college team has been irrelevant for decades. You spend a Friday night at the local gym, you know the names of players, you know the matchups. Instead we got parents debating what game to go to and players happy to get a game rescheduled:
[Source] - ”I was torn between coming to my daughter’s basketball game and cheering for IU,” Leerkamp said.
“First I saw New Albany and Jeffersonville changed theirs and I was like, hopefully ours get switched because I want to watch the game too,” Brown County basketball player Cash Harden said.
As a fellow parent, I'm dying at that quote. You do everything for your kids. You show up to games, you travel, you listen to their stories, whatever. But the moment your beloved college football team has some success? Tape the game for me sweetie, I'll watch it when you get home. We got a Peach Bowl to win and that takes priority in this household. I don't blame them. I'd be doing the same thing if Kentucky was ever in this spot. Send Mom to the game, get updates since we get everything in real time this day in age anyways.
This might be the biggest sign that Curt Cignetti turned Indiana football into a real program. Not the wins, not the conference title, it's the fact they made Indiana High School basketball change plans for a football game. That's nearly impossible to believe.
