Florida Gators QB D.J. Lagway, The #1 QB Recruit In The Nation From 2024, Is Transferring To Baylor
It wasn't long ago that D.J. Lagway was the most coveted QB in college football. He was a 5-star recruit coming out high school in 2024. The #1 ranked QB in the nation. 247 Sports had him rated 100/100. Now, headed into his junior season, when there's no shortage of teams who are seemingly just a quarterback away from competing for a national championship in 2026, D.J. Lagway is headed to Baylor.
To be fair, Baylor is in the Big 12. Which is a conference that's seemingly always up for grabs. And even when Lagway was coming out of high school, Baylor was in the running to get him. D.J. Lagway's father played for Baylor in the late 90's. He's a Baylor legacy.
It's a hell of a pickup for Baylor. D.J. Lagway has undoubtedly not lived up to expectations so far in his college career. But he's dealt with some injuries. He also faced the unfortunate adversity of playing well enough at the end of his freshman season to save Billy Napier's job. And as much as D.J. Lagway may have underperformed at Baylor, he's still a 6-foot-3, 240-pound specimen of a man. There's been times where he's shown his potential.

To me, transferring to a school like Baylor makes perfect sense for Lagway. He gets out of the bright lights of the SEC. He'll likely be facing lesser defenses on a week-to-week basis (although every year the defense in the SEC does just get worse and worse). Baylor has had a few down years in a row, but they've also had great teams under Dave Aranda. Even in the last two seasons, Baylor QB Sawyer Robertson threw for 3,071 and 3,681 yards respectively. From a purely "fun" standpoint, playing in a competent Big 12 offense sounds like a WAY better time than playing at Florida. Or at any other high-pressure SEC school with wildly unrealistic expectations.
D.J. Lagway has all the physical tools to make a Baylor a contender in the Big 12. But mentally… when it comes to reading defenses and not turning the ball over… that's what remains to be seen.
