There's Not A Chance In Hell The Hughes Brothers Are Staying In New Jersey After The Last 72 Hours
Rich Graessle. Getty Images.Every summer we all just have to sit there and listen to a bunch of dipshits tell us about how the New Jersey Devils are finally going to get over the hump this year. They have been anointed as the champions of the offseason for seemingly 5 offseasons in a row now. This is a franchise that has only won a single playoff series since 2012, yet people will always talk about them as a legitimate Stanley Cup contender every October.
They thought they were going to be able to sign Nikolaj Ehlers over the offseason. That didn't work. Their idiot fans thought it was a lock that Quinn Hughes would end up alongside his brothers in Newark, but their coward GM couldn't sack up and make the deal happen. And if there was ever any hope for the Hughes brothers to link up in New Jersey after Quinn's contract runs up at the end of 2027? Well that ship has quickly sailed after the last 72 hours.
On Sunday night you had Devils fans booing Luke Hughes every time he touched the puck. To be fair, he absolutely deserved those boos after scoring back-to-back own goals. But that's still an easy way to make an athlete despise the shit out of the fans he plays in front of every night. And how do the Devils follow up that performance? Well let's just ask Frank about how last night went…
A 9-0 loss to the Islanders. Markstrom left in the net for all 9 goals against. Morale has to be at an all-time low for the Devils. You can't elicit that type of reaction out of Frank and feel good about yourselves. And now we're just a month away from Quinn and Jack Hughes teaming up together at the Olympics in Milan. Quinn is having the time of his life up in Quinnesota right now, and I'm sure there's absolutely nothing about what's going on in New Jersey that'll make him even consider signing there in a couple of summers. You throw a couple drinks at dinner with Bill Guerin into the mix, and Jack Hughes will have a trade demand in no time.

It's over for the Devils. It always has been, but it's great to finally see all the writing on the walls. Multiple first overall picks. Big free agency signings. A splashy head coaching hire. All for absolutely fucking nothing. Incredible.
