Texas Tech $5M Transfer QB Brendan Sorsby Is Welcomed To Lubbock By Giant Electronic Billboard In Times Square (New York City)
Hell yeah. That's fuck you money right there. Well... not really. I was told by somebody on Twitter that Times Square billboards are remarkably cheap these days. And it's definitely not "fuck you money" relative to the $5 million dollars Texas Tech is paying Brendan Sorsby for a year of quarterbacking. But in the sense of, "There is no fucking reason for this whatsoever. We're just doing this because we can.", it kind of is.
It also appears this billboard was bought and paid for by Lift Sports Management – the agency who represents Sorsby. Either way, who in the hell is that billboard for? Brendan Sorsby (native of Dallas, TX) isn't hanging out in Times Square. Is it for the tens of Texas Tech football fans living in Manhattan? Do they think getting Brendan Sorsby's name out in NYC will increase his Heisman chances? They must be attempting to lay the groundwork for Texas Tech to become New York City's official Big 12 team. Much like Vanderbilt has with the SEC.
Or maybe is it just a dumb marketing stunt that they know is stupid enough to go semi-viral and garner a little attention. Yeah that's probably it.
But as my former co-worker Youngstown Bob once declared, New York City bars are the best place in the world to watch college football. Because there's fans from every school. Technically speaking, I'm sure there are. But compared to most schools with respectable college football programs, there can't be THAT many who have matriculated from Lubbock to The Big Apple. Maybe I'm way off there. Texas Tech is a sizable university. They've got a real business school. They've got an engineering program. But it's hard to find a couple cities more diametrically opposed than New York City and Lubbock.

Ok that side-by-side is kinda bullshit too. Lubbock is a city of over 270,000 people. Roughly the size of Fort Wayne or Toledo. They have a skyline (buildings, not chili). But that's still a ridiculous ad to take out in the middle of Manhattan. Welcome to Lubbock, Brendan Sorsby. From your agents in New York. Can't wait to see how the rest of the Big 12 responds.
