Head Coach Micah Shrewsberry Went Ballistic And Charged At An Official After Four-Point Play Rollercoaster Cost Notre Dame The Game Vs. Cal

We have a bunch of college basketball games ahead of us this weekend, but it's unlikely we'll get a scene like the one we had late Friday/early Saturday at Haas Pavilion.

Notre Dame coach Micah Shrewsberry went wild and charged at an official after a late foul call gave Cal a four-point play and the win.

How did we get here?

Notre Dame led late, on the road, 71-68. Cal has one last shot. It looks like the Irish actually try to foul a few times while the ball is on the floor, but don't get the whistle, and that had to irk Shrewsberry—no call until they get into the frontcourt.

Here's some slow-mo of the play in question, and the argument here would be that Cal gets fouled before the shot. That should have meant a few FTs for Cal and would have waived off the shot attempt.

Okay, here's the still shot from the play, and yes, it tells that story. But the Cal player is going full speed and watching it live, it's much closer than this.

The NCAA has put a significant emphasis on a "new interpretation of the continuous motion rule to allow for more "and-1" opportunities." Based on that, when I watch it full speed, yeah, I think they got the call right. It's bang-bang, but you have to get the foul before that if you're the Irish. I'm guessing they'd argue they tried to foul at half court, but it wasn't called.

So they call the foul, the shot goes in, place is going wild. Then, in all the excitement of the play, the officials OVERTURNED the call. No shot!

Cal Coach Mark Madsen was incredulous.

Then, after they waived it off, they DOUBLE-REVERSED the call and counted the basket! A reverse of the reversal! Count the hoop!

Shot is good. Then the free throw is good—Four-point play, Cal up one.

Cal gets the stop in the final seconds and hold on to win. Seven points and one wild call in the final 11 seconds to secure the victory. You can see at the end of this clip the moment Shrewsberry chases the officials right off the court.

How about this angle? 👀👀

His players jump in and try to calm him down, but Shrewsberry is fired up. My kids would call that a crash out, I think. The NCAA is likely to call it worthy of some type of discipline, right?

And look, I get his emotion - this was a brutal way to lose, and the reverse of the reversal is tough - but I think they got the call right. And I know you probably shouldn't go after an official on the court right after a game.

Just a wild start to the college basketball weekend.
